Tomorrow, English graduate student Nathan Lindsay Lee will be awarded his PhD posthumously at UL's Summer 2024 commencement ceremony. His parents, Jerry and Pam Lee, are in Lafayette to receive the degree on his behalf. If any of you folks are in town, the ceremony begins at 10:00am in the Cajundome. Come cheer for Nathan (or tell your people to cheer for Nathan) and all of our graduates in English as the university recognizes their achievements ❤🖤

Kaitlyn Moore received the Owen Reamer Award for Excellence in English! Kaitlyn is a senior English Creative Writing major with a minor in French and a 4.0 GPA. Her writing spans a broad variety of genres, including feminist horror, dystopian, fantasy, poetry and experimental nonfiction. Oftentimes she explores issues regarding mental health within her writing, hoping to raise awareness in a creative format. After graduating, she plans to continue on to grad school in pursuit of her PhD.

Sarah Joubert received the Owen Reamer Award for Excellence in English! Sarah is a Senior English major with a 4.0 GPA that plans to graduate in May. She spends the majority of her time at Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic Student Center and is a proud Ragin' Cajun Catholic. Sarah aspires to become an English Teacher.

Jace Gisclair has been chosen as the recipient of the C.E. Richard Moving Image Arts Award!
Jace is an ambitious filmmaker and a hardworking student. He has collaborated on many of his classmates' projects in front of and behind the camera. Jace's capstone project brought together a large student crew to tell a complex story challenging in both content and technical obstacles which provided a great learning experience for him and all the students involved.
Jace also works as a butcher and has credits on a feature film, as well as multiple commercials, short films and student projects. He thrives on storytelling, delves into American Sign Language, scriptwriting and film analysis.

Stacy Cormier has been awarded the Dr. James H. Wilson and Dr. Paul T. Nolan Creative Writing Award in Drama for her work entitled "D is for S*x." She is an English major with plans to graduate in May. She writes,
"Throughout my life, writing has been my outlet. I simply must write. I must translate onto paper what floats around in my mind to make space for thought and awareness to present reality. It's too easy to dream. I am enamored with words; how they create worlds, evoke feelings, and connect humanity."

Tanner J. Menard received the Florence Sanders Jones English Scholarship and the Social Justice Award! He is a poet, composer and yogi. His book and album The Poet was recently released on Full Spectrum Records and Post Asemic Press. He has published thirteen albums of experimental music a number of textual publications. He is the founder of UBU University, an online yoga platform. Since 2005, Tanner has worked with several nonprofits on issues ranging from HIV to LGBTQIA political rights to housing and voting rights. He teaches a therapeutic creative writing workshop to people living with addiction at Acadiana CARES once a week, as well as teaching a meditation class there on Friday afternoons.
Additionally, Tanner taught for two years as a tribal council person for the Atakapa-Ishak Nation, where he helped to start a language restoration project. He continues to attend advisory council meetings for the tribe.

Ash Helms-Tippit is the recipient of the Judge Felix Voorhis Award for Creative Writing! She writes fiction and poetry, while also studying children's literature, q***r literature, animal studies, and intersectional feminism. Originally from Alabama, she is currently earning a Ph.D. in English/Creative Writing at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette. Ash is currently working on a research paper involving animal studies and bibliotherapy for a children's literature conference in May. She is revising a poetry chapbook/small collection to begin submitting soon and writing a Y.A. novel and a q***r romance novel.
After this semester, she plans to devote all her attention to her comprehensive exams in q***r creative writing, children's lit, and intersectional feminist lit.

Alice Marie Wilson is the recipient of the Florence Sanders Jones English Scholarship! Alice is a Master's candidate at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, studying English Rhetoric and Composition. They have presented their research at the Southwest Popular/American Culture Association Conference. Their research interests include studies in Black culture, Critical Race Theory, Spiritual and Occult Rhetorics, and Critical Pedagogies.

Charlene H. Carruthers is the recipient of the Dr. Shelley Martin Memorial Award for Best Graduate Student Seminar Paper for her essay entitled, "Early Modern Constructions of Race: Otherness, Blackface, and Cultural Appropriation in Shakespeare's As You Like It." This essay was described as "admirable in its selection and use of sources to sustain a challenging argument." Charlene is a is a first-year doctoral student at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette studying creative writing. She obtained her MFA in creative writing from Texas State University. Her research interest is based in African American studies, and she is currently working on her first novel entitled Strange Fruit.

Congratulations to Brooke Dupuis, the recipient of the Carmen Mouton Benton Scholarship!
Brooke is an English major with a concentration in Creative Writing and a minor in History. She loves to read and write, but also enjoys acting in plays, watching movies, and spending time with family. She plans on going to grad school to continue studying creative writing. Faculty describe Brooke as "eager to read beyond the assigned texts and [able] to apply close reading strategies independently across both print and film media."
