⭐️ S E N I O R S P O T L I G H T ⭐️

Our last senior spotlight goes to…. Lora Charles!! She is from Church Point, Louisiana and enjoys spending time with her friends whenever she can, babysitting 4 of the most precious little kiddos, and exercising. She is a very passionate and caring person and being able to help others is always something that makes her heart happy. She is super excited to be graduating this spring, and cannot wait to see what the future holds.

What sparked your interest in the field of speech pathology?
The field of audiology sparked my interest, because it is something that I have been around and related to throughout my whole life. I have worn hearing aids since I was a young child, and I want to be able to help others adjust and learn through the use of my experiences.

Following graduation, she plans to attend Louisiana Tech University to receive her AuD.

Congrats Lora, UL NSSLHA is proud of you! ❤️🖤

📚Graduate student edition📝

Meet Leilani Iem, our president!! Here is a little bit about her: I have so enjoyed my past 6 years at UL Lafayette! I initially graduate with my Bachelor's degree in Communicative Disorders in December 2020 and will be graduating with my Master's this May! During my past 2 years while in graduate school I have been so lucky to serve as the UL Lafayette NSSLHA Vice President and President which has truly been an honor. Getting to lead such an awesome group of students has been a highlight of my graduate experience! Another highlight was speaking at the 2022 ASHA Conference and being supporting by my fellow students and professors!

What sparked your interest in the field of speech pathology?
My love for speech-language pathology was initially sparked when I learned how many different individuals SLPs can work with across a variety of settings! Seeing that the options in the field were endless definitely contributed to why I wanted to enter the field since I knew I would never stop learning!

What specific fields are you interested in/passionate about in our scope of practice?
Currently I am interested heavily in the pediatric population including language disorders, autism spectrum disorders, and stuttering. I am also interested in continuing my experiences with gender-affirming voice therapy, diversity, and research!

What are your future plans after graduation?
After graduation I hope to complete my CFY and earn my CCC's!

It has truly been my pleasure serving on the NSSLHA Executive Board and I can't express how much I have learned from the experience and how many opportunities have been available to me because of it! Thank you to my entire Executive Board that has supported me throughout the way! Special shout out to McKenzi Bienvenue, my Vice President, who has been my rock, my right-hand man, and other half through it all! Thank you all, Leilani Iem signing out👋🏻

She shared that she is so excited to begin her career in speech-language pathology!

What sparked your interest in the field of speech pathology?
Both of my brothers attended speech therapy (feeding/ swallowing & articulation)

What specific fields are you interested in/passionate about in our scope of practice?

Meet Rylie Candella! She is a transfer student from LSUE where she played college softball for 3 years. In 2019, her team won the NJCAA National Championship and that is one of her greatest accomplishments!!! She shared that coming to UL has been such a great experience. She’s made so many great friends and memories here and look forward to making even more!

What sparked her interested in our field?
The combination of medical knowledge and literacy/communication aspects of speech pathology piqued my interest because I felt it was an intriguing way to give everyone the experience of communication.

What is she specifically interested in/passionate about in our field?
She is interested in working in a school setting, working with students on a range of communication disorders as well as building foundational literacy skills.

What are her future plans?
After graduation, she plans to continue my education at the graduate program of UL Lafayette and look forward to the new challenges ahead!

Note from Rylie:
Congratulations to all who are graduating and those who are being accepted into graduate programs! I hope we all continue to follow our passions and strive to achieve more from ourselves every day!

Congratulations Rylie, UL NSSLHA is proud of you!🖤❤️
