An accommodation is an alteration of the learning environment, curriculum format, or means of communication that allows an individual with a disability to gain access to academic content, complete assigned tasks, and participate in daily activities with peers.
In a school setting, an accommodation does not alter the academic content taught; instead, it makes it possible for students with disabilities to benefit from instruction and make progress in the regular curriculum.
And example of an accommodation would be allowing a student with a specific learning disability in reading to have additional time to complete assignments since it is expected that the student would take longer than students without disabilities to decode the words on the page or to process the meaning of those words in context to fully comprehend the material. The student would still be reading the same information and completing the same assignment as the rest of students in his class but would be given more time to do it.
