South Asia is one of the most religiously diverse and culturally rich regions in the world — home to Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, Sikhism, Jainism, Christianity, and numerous indigenous traditions. For nearly two billion people, faith is deeply interwoven with identity, moral formation, governance, and daily life.

When nurtured, this pluralism can be a powerful force for cooperation, resilience, and human flourishing. When strained, it can challenge peace, justice, and the dignity of individuals and communities.

This is where the conversation begins.

Across South Asia, constitutional and legal traditions affirm that all persons are born free and equal in dignity and rights—including freedom of thought, conscience, and religion. Yet these commitments are experienced unevenly in practice. Political polarization, migration, economic inequality, and rapid social change continue to shape how religious freedom is understood, protected, and lived.

At the heart of this year’s theme is the marigold—a flower widely recognized across South Asia as a symbol of life, resilience, devotion, and shared celebration. Found in temples, mosques, churches, weddings, festivals, and public gatherings, it represents diversity expressed not as division, but as color, vitality, and connection.

Anchored in the phrase Ek parivaar, ek maanavta—One Family. One Humanity.—the 2026 Religious Freedom & Human Dignity Conference invites judges, scholars, religious leaders, policymakers, students, and civil society practitioners into a shared dialogue grounded in dignity, mutual respect, and the belief that flourishing is strongest when it is shared.

Treasure the memories of unity in diversity with our exclusive enamel pins from BYU–Hawaii’s RFHD conferences! Each pin commemorates a specific conference: Human Dignity & ASEAN Southeast Asia, Oceanian Perspectives on Human Dignity, and Asian Perspectives on Human Dignity. As cherished souvenirs, these pins symbolize your participation and commitment to celebrating global understanding and respect at each event.

Members of the executive committee for the conferences held on campus receive the Religious Freedom & Human Dignity Initiative enamel pin, symbolizing their leadership and dedication to the initiative’s mission.

Whether you attend annually or biennially, collecting them all is a badge of honor, reflecting your dedication to supporting human dignity and religious freedom. Wear them proudly as a reminder of your time at BYU–Hawaii and your role in shaping a more inclusive world.
