There are three principal opinions about the necessity of good works. First is that of those who (sinning in defect) deny it; such were formerly the Simonians and the modern Epicureans and Libertines, who make good works arbitrary and indifferent, which we may perform or omit at pleasure. The second is that of those who (sinning in excess) affirm and press the necessity of merit and causality; such were the ancient Pharisees and false apostles, who contended that works are necessary to justification. These are followed by the Romanists and Socinians of our day. The third is that of those who (holding the middle ground between these two extremes) neither simply deny, nor simply assert; yet they recognize a certain necessity for them against the Libertines, but uniformly reject the necessity of merit against the Romanists. This is the opinion of the orthodox.

The power is back on. The seminary office building is undamaged. However, the parking lot is littered with Spanish moss and branches. The gas station lines are no longer a two hour wait, so I’m fueling up the tools and cleaning that up today. With a 10-12 degree temperature drop expected, I will be replacing shingles on my house tomorrow. Seminary and college operations should be back to normal thursday. Praise the Lord. - Jason

Many of you are probably already aware, but in case you aren’t—we have a major hurricane heading our way. If it makes landfall in Tampa as currently predicted, it could be the worst storm Tampa has ever experienced. We are located around 40 miles from the coast. While I’m not anticipating flooding at my location, we will likely lose power. During the last major storm that hit us directly, we were without power for around five days.

That said, please know that our response to emails and other communications may be delayed this weekend. We appreciate your prayers during this time.

Please pray for those who may use this event and its devastation to mock the Lord and His sovereignty, unable to see any purpose behind it. Pray that many will recognize their frailty and their need to rely on the Lord, and that He will bring many to repentance.

If Christ had had a design to lay aside his human nature, he would have done so when he had finished in it his work of obedience and sufferings, and had thereby so far answered the end of his incarnation that nothing more was necessary for the purchase of redemption. But when he rose from the dead, as a conqueror over death and hell, and was declared to have accomplished the work he came into the world to perform, it is certain he did not lay it aside, but ascended visibly into heaven, and shall come again, in a visible manner, in that same nature, to judge the world at the last day. - Thomas Ridgley
