In today’s workforce, precision skills change what’s possible and open doors to new careers.

This summer, Thaddeus Stevens College is offering Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (TIG) Training in partnership with Tec Centro and SACA Pennsylvania, creating a meaningful pathway for individuals ready to step into high-demand fields like manufacturing and construction. 💥

Throughout weekends from July 25–Aug. 30, participants will learn in an environment built around practice and application. Focusing on TIG welding safety, equipment setup, metal preparation, welding in multiple positions, carbon steel TIG techniques, inspection, and troubleshooting, each session is designed to build technical ability in high-wage careers.

Supported by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, this training reflects a shared mission of removing barriers and expanding access to skills that lead to sustainable careers.

“We have the power to change our communities and our world.”

As a 2026 graduate of the Mechanical Engineering Technology program at Thaddeus Stevens College, Renae Ratchford pursued their degree as a single parent, returning to the classroom after nearly a decade away in hopes of building a better future for themselves and their daughter.

Balancing family and a full-time education, Renae leaned on the support of community and classmates every step of the way. One of their favorite memories is the first time their class worked through a challenging problem side by side at the whiteboard, fully collaborating as a team.🩶

It’s a story we hear time and time again as we do work aligned with our mission: open doors to education, create an environment for success, and watch how students reach their potential.

Listen to Renae’s moving speech on community and generosity, and learn more about Mechanical Engineering Technology at the links in the comments.

Precision was the focus of this year’s Computer Integrated Machining capstone projects.

Using the technical skills they’ve developed at , students designed and manufactured a custom bulldog-shaped tool changer, with everyone contributing a part while working within tight tolerance fitments, highlighting the accuracy required in the machining industry.⚙️

Students also collaborated on a detailed Dodson clock, with each student responsible for building at least two components. Students utilized every piece of equipment in the shop, showcasing the depth of experience they’ve gained throughout the program.

Projects like these demonstrate the applied, career-focused learning that prepares our students to excel in advanced manufacturing after graduation.

At our recent Alumni Awards Banquet, we were proud to recognize Frank Gaffney, a 2012 Plumbing Technology graduate, as the recipient of the Alumni Citizenship Award that honors his community leadership and service.

Since graduating, Frank has continued to create opportunity for others. From mentoring young athletes as a high school football coach to co-founding a landscaping business with his wife rooted in providing meaningful work and second chances, Frank embodies the mission of Thaddeus Stevens College far beyond campus.

His impact is a reminder that education is not only about careers; it’s about empowering people to strengthen communities and create pathways for others to succeed.
