2026 Commencement Speaker Dr. Michael L. Patterson is a respected scholar, pastor, author, and community leader whose life’s work has been devoted to faith, leadership development, and community transformation. He currently serves as an adjunct professor at Morehouse College, where he inspires students to engage history, culture, and leadership through the lens of faith, justice, and service.

With more than three decades of pastoral ministry and over 20 years of service as an elder at The Path Church, where he currently serves, Dr. Patterson has dedicated his life to discipleship and the cultivation of principled leadership, particularly among men. Throughout his ministry, he has mentored emerging leaders across a wide range of professions, including business, higher education, nonprofit leadership, public service, and the arts, encouraging them to integrate their faith into every sphere of influence and to carry the message of Christ into their communities and careers.

A passionate advocate for lifelong learning and meaningful relationships, Dr. Patterson enjoys reading, visiting the ocean, and spending quality time with his wife of more than 37 years, Shawn, their children Alexis and Joe, son-in-law Ramon, and their extended family. His enduring mission is to glorify God by serving others, developing leaders, and leaving a legacy of faith, wisdom, and hope for future generations.

At Commencement this past weekend, Elijah Kess (Class of 2021) and Enoch Bylla (Class of 2022) received the Graduate of the Last Decade Award. Learn more about what God is doing in and through these alumni!

The Graduate of the Last Decade, or GOLD Award, is an award designed to recognize recent alumni who exemplify our mission of servant leadership.

A small number of GLCC graduates from the decade prior to this year’s graduates are nominated by the faculty, and then a committee of the current year’s graduating seniors make the final choice on the recipients of the award.

The 2026 Divine Servant Award was presented at our Commencement ceremony this past weekend to Matthew Wesaw. Matt has lived a life of exemplary service in the marketplace and we are pleased to recognize the way he has represented the Lord and GLCC.
--------------------
The Divine Servant Award is one part of a memorial to Dr. Brant Lee Doty who was the long-time Academic Dean and professor at GLCC. It was Dr. Doty who epitomized the servant leader model and who helped incorporate it into the mind-set of those who were blessed by his instruction and example.

The Divine Servant recognition, with the approval of the College Administration, is given to a Senior Student or alumnus whose life has consistently illustrated the sacrificial servant spirit as taught by Jesus Christ and demonstrated in the life of Dr. Brant Lee Doty. This award is the highest and most prestigious the College has to offer.

The memorial, introduced at the 50th Anniversary of GLCC, includes a large bronze sculpture of the Divine Servant and is located in the lobby of the Doty Center.
