Did you hear about this archaeological finding in Northern Michigan?

This past summer, archaeologists at Colonial Michilimackinac concluded their fourteenth season of excavating at the fifth unit of the Southeast Rowhouse within the stockade walls of the fort—a home occupied by an “English trader” around the 1760s. Although the trader’s name is unknown, archaeologists have uncovered a new clue about his identity: a small, glass intaglio with Masonic symbols, featuring the square and compass framing the letter “G.” The intaglio, which could have belonged to the trader or one of his guests, may have come from a linked button or a ring. Though a Masonic lodge was not established at Mackinac until 1784, many of the soldiers and traders at Michilimackinac were members of lodges in Detroit or other cities.

A happy 181st birthday to Brother Hazen S. Pingree, a member of Union Lodge of Strict Observance No. 3.

A survivor of the notorious Andersonville POW prison, he had a lengthy career as a shoemaker prior to serving as Mayor of Detroit from 1890 to 1897 then Governor of Michigan from 1897 to 1901. He is widely regarded as Detroit's best mayor and considered by many scholars as one of the greatest mayors in US history. "The Idol of the People", he was a champion for the common man, fighting monopolies and corruption, prioritizing city services, and combating social and economic inequalities. He even started potato patches to feed hungry poor people.

His monument near Grand Circus Park in downtown Detroit was dedicated on May 30th, 1904.
