Congratulations to dual MSW/MPH alum Dylan Pell (not pictured), on co-authoring a new report examining emergency department visits related to alcohol, substance use and mental health in New Mexico. The report analyzes 2021-2024 data — including social determinants of health, discharge disposition and time spent in the ED — and highlights the strong overlap between behavioral health ED visits, social determinants of health and homelessness across our state.
This is exactly the kind of research-informed, community-centered work we hope our graduates carry forward. Read the full report in the comments below. 👇

A new report available through the UNM Digital Repository examines emergency department visits related to alcohol, substance use and mental health in New Mexico.

Authored by Sam Swift, PhD, MPH, Maya Stefanovic, MPH, PMP, and Dylan Pell, MPH, MSW, the report looks at data from 2021 to 2024, including social determinants of health, discharge disposition and time spent in the emergency department.

The findings highlight a strong overlap between behavioral health emergency department visits, social determinants of health and homelessness in New Mexico.

We appreciate the support of United Healthcare New Mexico in helping make this project possible.
