This summer, nine students from several New Mexico community colleges participated in the annual Summer Community College Opportunity for Research Experience (SCCORE) Program of the New Mexico AMP.
Seven student participants worked in STEM research projects at NMSU and two at UNM. SCCORE is a research immersion, full-time program that supports pre-transfer community college students in STEM majors to serve as research assistants to university faculty and graduate student mentors in their related fields. Faculty from several colleges served as mentors to SCCORE students at NMSU.
At the end of the six-week program, the student participants at NMSU presented their research posters at the SCCORE Student Research Symposium, held in Hernandez Hall on NMSU Main Campus. An NMSU physics undergraduate student who worked on undergraduate research mentored by faculty of the Astronomy Department this summer also presented at the symposium. Interim Dean David Jauregui spoke at the Symposium about the importance of experiential learning, such as undergraduate research experiences like the ones provided by SCCORE and the other NM AMP programs.
All SCCORE participants will also present their research at the annual NM AMP Student Research Conference, to be held at the NMSU Student Corbett Center on October 24, 2025. https://nmampconf.nmsu.edu/index.html
Each summer, the SCCORE program provides an excellent overview of the host university, including an orientation to campus resources and university life, laboratory and research facility tours, educational field trips, professional development, and much more. Participating students live on campus (if they are not local) and attend a credit-bearing class. https://nmamp.nmsu.edu/programs/sccore.html
This year, the SCCORE program was partially funded through a Public Service Grant awarded to NM AMP by the New Mexico Space Grant Consortium (NMSGC). NMSGC Program Manager Luz Estela Heredia also spoke at the SCCORE symposium about the opportunities that NASA offers to students and faculty and the importance of undergraduate STEM research experiences.
NM AMP is a statewide partnership of seven universities, with NMSU as the lead institution, with the goal to increase the number of students who complete high quality STEM baccalaureate degrees and to prepare undergraduate students to enter the STEM workforce and/or pursue graduate education. NM AMP supports students through a broad range of activities, including the Undergraduate Research Scholars (URS) program, the STEM PREP program, SCCORE, the New Mexico AMP Transfer Stipend, an annual Student Research Conference, and the Community College Professional Development Workshop series offered in conjunction with the student conference.
