The Solids team is ready for IREC after a successful launch on May 17!

Months of preparation and have practice have led to our most successful flight yet for our competition rocket, Bright Fury, on a KNSB motor. After setting up Bright Fury on the launch pad at 8:20 am, the rocket reached our highest altitude in the history of this project: 10,170ft. Our SRAD flight computer successfully deployed both drogue and main parachutes and carried the rocket to a safe recovery. Our newest addition, the Field-Imaging Hardware (FIH) payload successfully separated during main deployment.

The team is now conducting final tests and touch-ups to prepare for the International Rocket Engineering Competition in Midland, Texas in T-minus two weeks. Go Solids!

🔹🔹🔹

This past Saturday, our team hot fired a 98mm N-motor using our Berry Cherry APCP formula.

One second into the burn, the most aft grain unfortunately collapsed due to a soft cure leading to an over pressurization event.

While our team will not be flying Berry Cherry at IREC 2026, we will be continuing our propellant dev campaign and hope to have a successful static fire with Berry Cherry by the end of the quarter 🚀

In 56 days, we’ll be standing in the desert in Midland, Texas and counting down to launch at the International Rocketry Engineering Competition.

Every test, every late night, every system we refine between now and then leads to that moment.

On April 28th, UCI Rocket Project Solids will be participating in Giving Day to continue developing our current systems, refining our designs, and preparing for future launches and competition success. Every donation makes a difference and fuels real progress.

Last weekend, UCI Rocket Project Solids successfully conducted a test launch to 9,000 ft. apogee with our testbed rocket, Night Fury. This milestone featured our first-ever flight with airbrake deployment and another successful recovery by our SRAD flight computer. For our team, this marks a major step forward in our airbrake design and integration process. We are continuing to adapt and change our systems for optimal apogee prediction through the rest of our upcoming test launches this Spring before the IREC competition.

As always, thank you to our sponsors, mentors, and most importantly for our members for the countless hours of dedication that have made this possible!

UCI Rocket Project Solids is now actively recruiting members for the 2026–27 school year. All subteams are open, and we welcome students from any major. Passion, commitment, and a desire to learn are the only requirements to join RPS.

Applications are due April 24 at 11:59 PM.

RPS is a highly competitive, student-led design team that designs, manufactures, and launches solid-propellant rockets. Our subteams include Avionics, Launch Vehicle, Operations, Payload, and Propulsion.

Our team has consistently launched and recovered rockets at 10,000+ ft apogee. Last year, at the International Rocketry Engineering Competition, we earned gold-standard recognition in the 10k SRAD category and Best Team Video.
