It's possible to encounter a blow fly that looks strikingly similar to the NWS fly. The TAHC encourages animal owners to be on the lookout for larvae in wounds first, be aware of potentially suspicious flies around living flesh second, and report suspicions to the TAHC immediately. Official identification of a fly or maggot requires confirmation by a diagnostic lab in coordination with animal health professionals, so it is important to contact the relevant authorities to confirm species identification.
