Alumni Pond update 🚨 New Mexico State University is conducting a final evaluation of the newly reconstructed Alumni Pond to ensure the pond operates as intended before reopening to the campus community and public.

The project team, design engineers and NMSU personnel have been closely monitoring water levels and assessing the pond’s performance at its optimal operating level, including its ability to support fully submerged aquatic vegetation and long-term sustainability goals.

According to Jose Loera, executive director of Project Development and Engineering, recent observations led the university and its partners to conduct an additional review before moving forward with reopening plans.

NMSU appreciates the continued patience and support of the campus community and public as this work progresses. The university remains committed to reopening Alumni Pond and will provide updates as additional information becomes available. (Photos from May 2026)

Ice cream is a summertime staple and a favorite dessert among Americans, with innovative flavors and recipes being consistently introduced into the marketplace. But you might not realize that some of the big secrets to producing a high-quality ice cream come from a small lab at New Mexico State University.

Sergio Martinez-Monteagudo leads the food science dairy lab housed in NMSU’s College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences and operated as part of the Center of Excellence in Sustainable Foods and Agricultural Systems. Most recently, the dairy lab has partnered with ice cream company Blue Bunny to research how to improve ice cream quality by exploring formulations that prevent it from melting too quickly.

Connie Voisine is one of the most accomplished poets in southern New Mexico. She earned a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Fulbright Fellowship and the New Mexico Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts. Voisine also co-founded a non-profit organization to help disabled writers. She has published five books of poetry with another on the way in 2027.

On top of all that, Voisine, a professor in the Master of Fine Arts program, has been teaching students poetry and writing at New Mexico State University for 25 years. She will retire at the end of June.

“Dr. Connie Voisine has been both an exceptional artist and a meaningful changemaker within our institution,” said Amy Lanasa, Creative Media Institute department head. “Her accomplishments as a Guggenheim-winning poet brought distinction to our program, while her work helping move the creative writing program into CMI reshaped the possibilities for interdisciplinary creative education at NMSU. I'm so proud to have gotten to work with Connie.” https://newsroom.nmsu.edu/news/nmsu-professor--nationally-known--award-winning-poet-to-retire/s/38a3303e-d102-4d37-a7df-6b2a8ed14c7b

The Southwest dust storms in 2025 reached intensities not seen since the Dust Bowl, with El Paso, Texas experiencing its most intense and frequent storms since 1936.
