Valainis ahead by two shots after first day of Senior Chapter Championship

Andrew Valainis came into the So. Nevada Senior Championship as a winner in two of the four events he's played in this year, including a season low round of 65 at Boulder City in January. His solid play has continued in the first round as he fired a 1-under 70 today at Las Vegas National.
Valainis started out a little slow with bogies on two of his first three holes, but quickly turned it around with birdies on the 4th and 5th holes. His back nine was steady coming in with two birdies and just one bogey.
Valainis has a two-shot lead over Tom Dawson who had quite a day posting 6 birdies, 7 bogies and 5 pars and finished with a one-over 72.
After that, there are four players tied for third place with 4-over 75s.

All players are back at it tomorrow with the first group teeing off at Las Vegas National at 1:30 pm.

SNGA TAKES HOME THE WIN WITH CLUTCH PLAY!
The team from the SNGA got some clutch up and downs on the 18th hole from Ed Fryatt and Daren Johnson that help clinch the win in a tightly contested two-day match between some of the best amateurs from the SNGA and some of the best PGA professionals in Las Vegas. Going into the singles matches with a 2.5-1.5 lead, the SNGA got three wins (1up) and the final nail in the coffin was put there by Frank Abbott closing out his match on the 17th green. The final score was 6.5-5.5 in the closest battle in the three years this event has been running.
Congratulations to all of the players for making their respective teams! This is a great event that we look forward to every year and hope to see many making a push in 2018 to make their teams.

The SNGA now leads 2-1 overall.

We appreciate The Las Vegas Country Club and Red Rock Country Club for hosting our event this year! The courses were both and great shape!

DELANEY CAPTURES 2017 CHAPTER CHAMPIONSHIP

2017 Senior Match Play Champion and Southern Highlands Golf Club Director of Golf, Jim Delaney came into this week without playing much golf recently due to spending a couple weeks with family in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey in Houston. But, he did his best to focus on the task at hand and "just play the course and see what happens." Well, good things happened as Delaney played solid on Monday with three birdies and just one bogey to shoot a 2-under 70, giving him a two-shot lead heading into the second day.
Things didn't start out so easy for Delaney though, nerves got the best of him and he bogied the first two holes bringing him back to even par for the championship. "I was very nervous off the first tee," Delaney said, "but, it's all about concentration in these situations. I just kept telling myself to finish the process and complete my golf swing." The nerves didn't last long as he made birdie on the par-4 3rd hole and that got him back on track. "After I birdied the third hole, it felt as if I had gained a little confidence and I began to sort out the process better and played more relaxed." And that he did, making three birdies and ten pars over his next thirteen holes.
Although he three-putted the par-3 17th hole, he still had confidence going into the difficult long par-4 18th. "I told myself to just play the hole in front of me and see what happens when finished." Delaney said.
Well, what happened was a 3-under total (70-71) for the two days and a two-shot victory over fellow PGA Professionals, Travis Long (Anthem Country Club) and Kim Dolan (Siena Golf Club), giving Delaney his second major of the season.
Delaney closed his remarks by saying, "I am very blessed to be a part of our Chapter as there are many great professionals. Being afforded the opportunity to golf with them makes me a better player."
Congratulations Jim, well done!

We would also like to congratulate TPC Las Vegas Assistant Professional, Andrew Elliott, for taking home his first Assistant's Championship. His two-day combined total of 145 was one shot better than Wes Weston (Wynn Golf & Country Club) and two shots better than 2017 Chapter Player of the Year, Troy Helseth (Anthem Country Club).

We'd like to give a big thanks to Andy Schaper, Dave Enyeart and the Boulder Creek staff for hosting this year's championship. They are very supportive to our Chapter and we appreciate greatly their hospitality.

He made birdies on holes 2 & 7 to go along with seven pars on the front nine to shoot 34 (El Dorado). He then continued a string of pars until finally breaking through with another birdie on the par-5 16th. He was 3-under going into the final hole of which was his only bogey on the day and finished with an opening round of 70 (-2). Delaney will be in the final pairing tomorrow with Wynn Golf & Country Club caddie, Brad Church and Anthem Country Club Assistant Professional and 2016-17 Player of the Year, Troy Helseth who both shot even par 72.
