DELANEY CAPTURES 2017 CHAPTER CHAMPIONSHIP
2017 Senior Match Play Champion and Southern Highlands Golf Club Director of Golf, Jim Delaney came into this week without playing much golf recently due to spending a couple weeks with family in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey in Houston. But, he did his best to focus on the task at hand and "just play the course and see what happens." Well, good things happened as Delaney played solid on Monday with three birdies and just one bogey to shoot a 2-under 70, giving him a two-shot lead heading into the second day.
Things didn't start out so easy for Delaney though, nerves got the best of him and he bogied the first two holes bringing him back to even par for the championship. "I was very nervous off the first tee," Delaney said, "but, it's all about concentration in these situations. I just kept telling myself to finish the process and complete my golf swing." The nerves didn't last long as he made birdie on the par-4 3rd hole and that got him back on track. "After I birdied the third hole, it felt as if I had gained a little confidence and I began to sort out the process better and played more relaxed." And that he did, making three birdies and ten pars over his next thirteen holes.
Although he three-putted the par-3 17th hole, he still had confidence going into the difficult long par-4 18th. "I told myself to just play the hole in front of me and see what happens when finished." Delaney said.
Well, what happened was a 3-under total (70-71) for the two days and a two-shot victory over fellow PGA Professionals, Travis Long (Anthem Country Club) and Kim Dolan (Siena Golf Club), giving Delaney his second major of the season.
Delaney closed his remarks by saying, "I am very blessed to be a part of our Chapter as there are many great professionals. Being afforded the opportunity to golf with them makes me a better player."
Congratulations Jim, well done!
We would also like to congratulate TPC Las Vegas Assistant Professional, Andrew Elliott, for taking home his first Assistant's Championship. His two-day combined total of 145 was one shot better than Wes Weston (Wynn Golf & Country Club) and two shots better than 2017 Chapter Player of the Year, Troy Helseth (Anthem Country Club).
We'd like to give a big thanks to Andy Schaper, Dave Enyeart and the Boulder Creek staff for hosting this year's championship. They are very supportive to our Chapter and we appreciate greatly their hospitality.
