Whether you're moving, downsizing, renovating, or simply making more room around the house, self-storage is a great long-term solution.
But as our customers begin storing with us, one of the questions we hear most often is how long they can safely leave their belongings in storage.
The answer, of course, depends on what you're storing. Some items—such as canned foods, bottled water, and over-the-counter medications—have natural expiration dates and can’t be stored indefinitely.
But most household belongings can remain safely in storage for months or even years when they're properly prepared.
The key is planning and packing for the long haul. This means cleaning and thoroughly drying your belongings before storing them, using sturdy boxes and protective covers, labeling everything clearly, and considering a climate-controlled unit for temperature-sensitive items like wood furniture, electronics, photos, artwork, and important documents.
It’s also smart to leave yourself room to access your belongings so you minimize the wear and tear that comes from repeatedly shifting boxes and furniture, and to check on your items occasionally to ensure that everything is staying organized and free of any mold or pest issues.
In short, a little preparation today can help ensure your belongings stay in excellent condition for as long as you need them.
