We are excited to welcome Rev. Cynthia Purvis to the SAU family. Rev. Purvis will be our new campus chaplain. A graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity and a Master of Arts in Christian Education/Youth Ministry, she has over ten years of experience developing programs and strategies for youth and young adults to engage in worship, Bible study, and missional service. Ordained in 2012 by the Santa Barbara Presbytery, Cynthia previously served as the Associate Pastor of Youth and Young Adults at StoneBridge Community Church in Simi Valley, California. With a BA in English from Westmont College, she wishes she had enough time to read all the books on her reading list.

As campus chaplain, Rev. Purvis hopes to bridge the gap between academic learning and faith practices. By placing an emphasis on spiritual formation her goal is to equip students with the tools to become resilient disciples of Christ. She will work closely with students, faculty, and staff to provide an atmosphere that encourages open dialogue between people from different backgrounds and experiences.

ST. ANDREWS PRESIDENT RECEIVES ORDER OF THE LONG LEAF PINE AWARD

North Carolina Independent Colleges & Universities:

St. Andrews University president, Paul Baldasare, has been honored with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the state’s highest award for service as he prepares to retire at the end of the month. The award was presented by Dr. Hope Williams, president of North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities, on behalf of Governor Roy Cooper.

A St. Andrews graduate, Baldasare went on to earn his law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He became a partner in a Durham law firm, Fowler & Baldasare, and later served as assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Advancement and Associate Legal Counsel at UNC-Chapel Hill. Baldasare was vice president for Institutional Advancement at St. Andrews for several years before being named president in 2006.

Under President Baldasare’s leadership, St. Andrews completed a capital campaign which raised more than $36 million, added its first Master’s level degree (Business Administration), added a dozen new majors and concentrations, created a growing on-line program for non-traditional students and increased the number of faculty to support expansion of the academic programs of study.

The Order of the Long Leaf Pine was presented to President Baldasare by President Williams via Zoom. On hand for the surprise presentation were former St. Andrews board chair, David Burns, and former board member, Senator Bill Purcell. Recipients of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine must have a minimum of 30 years of service in the State of North Carolina.

“President Paul Baldasare has long recognized the educational, cultural and economic impacts of St. Andrews University and his outstanding leadership as president has been instrumental in shepherding St. Andrews toward a bright future,” said President Williams. “I am honored to present him with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine on behalf of the Governor and with appreciation and admiration from St. Andrews students, faculty, staff and alumni as well as the broader Laurinburg and Scotland County communities.”

February 14th the Pre-Med Club drove up to meet Pediatric Hematology Oncologist Dr. Kevin Buckley at the Wake Forest School of Medical School. Not only is he a Physician at Wake Forest Baptist Health, but he is also a Professor of Pediatrics at Wake Forest School of Medicine and an alumni of SAU (Class of '93). Students were introduced to the basics of what a Hemotology Oncologist does day to day. They attended lectures, took tours of the various medical facilitates, and participated in a Simulated iCRIT case.
