The University of Kansas Geology student IBA team placed second in the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) Imperial Barrel Award (IBA) Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) West division competition on Wednesday 3/20. The KU team of Westin Scott, Alex Arimes, Elynor Head, Yakov Yermakov and Ali Albulushi (pictured from left) competed against teams from the University of Alberta (1st place), San Diego State University (3rd place), University of Texas at Austin, University of Calgary, and Campinas State University (UNICAMP – Sao Paulo Brazil). In the AAPG Imperial Barrel Award Program teams from universities in sections and regions around the world analyze subsurface data sets to evaluate prospective hydrocarbon basins, carbon sequestration sites or geothermal resources. Teams work intensively over a period of eight weeks and deliver their results in a 25-minute presentation to a panel of industry experts. The KU team was mentored by alumni Karen Lechtenberg and Edward Washburn, graduate student Mary Ama Tsiboe, and Geology faculty George Tsoflias and Anthony Walton.

Congratulations to the KU team for distinguishing themselves among an international group of highly regarded universities.

Dr. Matthew Kirk, an Associate Professor of Geology at Kansas State University, will present “Subsurface Impacts of Woody Encroachment in Grassland Watersheds” on Thursday, November 9th at 12:00 p.m. in the Beren Petroleum Conference Center (BPCC), room G192, Slawson Hall, on the KU Lawrence campus and on Zoom for the Geology Department Colloquium.

Dr. Kirk’s teaching and research is primarily focused on the chemistry and microbiology of aquifers, streams, and soils. Recent studies in his research group have examined groundwater quality in agricultural landscapes, impacts of land use and climate on hydrological processes and greenhouse gas fluxes, and geochemical controls on interactions between anaerobic microorganisms. This presentation will describe research to identify subsurface impacts of woody encroachment at Konza Prairie Biological State, a native tallgrass prairie in the Flint Hills of Kansas. Findings from two watersheds, one with about 20% woody plant coverage and one with about 40% will be discussed. Additional information about this presentation is in the attached flyer.

The presentation will last approximately one hour. Please attend Colloquium in person if you can. If you must participate remotely via Zoom, please use the link below to register in advance for the presentation.

After you register for the Zoom meeting, it will take a few minutes, or longer, for you to receive an automated email giving you the Meeting ID and Pass Code numbers. That is why we recommend you register in advance of the start of the meeting.

A reception will be held prior to the presentation, also in the BPCC, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. where coffee, tea and cookies will be served. Attendees are welcome to bring their own “brown bag” lunch to eat during the presentation.
