Housed within the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, the School of the Arts is home to four departments: Dance, Film and Media Studies, Theatre, and Visual Art. With more than 650 students, more than 60 faculty, and 14 degree programs, the School of the Arts is the largest arts unit at the University of Kansas. Through our students and faculty, we have the opportunity to inspire the imagination, increase participation in the arts, and make an impact on culture in Lawrence and beyond.

University Dance Company Auditions are open to all students of every major. We welcome students of all races, ethnicities, genders, sexualities, and abilities to audition. Students must be enrolled in a dance technique class in order to be a member of the UDC. KU Department of Visual Art In June, Bemis Center started a new initiative to support Black artists through an email and social media campaign. The 12 Bemis Alumni will each share the work of fellow artists that have provided inspiration or guidance to them over the years. Up first, Miatta Kawinzi has generously shared the artists below and her thoughts on their work. Miatta Kawinzi is an artist based in Brooklyn, NY. She was an artist-in-residence in 2016 and the inaugural winner of the Bemis Alumni Award in 2019.
