KU Marketing Club

KU Marketing Club Whether a marketing major or not, please join us to see how KU Marketing Club can help jumpstart your future! We have been to St. Louis and Chicago!

If you would like to be added to our email list, please email [email protected]. We host guest speakers who share their experiences and insights they've learned. Representatives from the Kansas City Royals, VML, Barkley, Hallmark, and Cerner are just a few examples of the exceptional speakers we have had in the past. Better yet, we host a few socials throughout the year where we kick

back and simply enjoy each other's company over some food and drinks. This allows us to forge both personal and professional connections which will be vital to our future success. (Sometimes there's even giveaways for gift cards and other prizes!)

We also go on a field trips throughout the year. In the past, we've traveled locally to Boulevard Brewing Co., The Roasterie, SMG, VML, and Cerner. Once a year we take selected members on a large trip to tour companies elsewhere.

Now one of the most active clubs in the business school, the Marketing Club is a great way for helping students develop professionally for their career in marketing or advertising. But where did it all start? In 2004, a student wanted to start the Marketing Club, but he needed a faculty advisor, as per KU regulation. As a result, he went to our final of the year, Joyce Claterbos.

Joyce has been the faculty advisor for the last 15 years and has watched it grow and evolve into the success that it is today. This year marks her final year advising the Marketing Club, so we decided to let her share some advice on how students can use the club to help with their career after they graduate. But first, she explains why joining the Club is so important for students.

First, members get opportunities to network with people in the field of marketing and advertising, as well as other students. Second, the guest speakers that are brought in get to show them what they do, giving members chances to explore the many areas that marketing has. Third, Joyce says employers look for students that were involved on campus, so actively participating in the club’s events can really set you apart from other candidates. Last, “you get a really neat t-shirt.”

Here are Joyce’s words of advice when it comes to taking advantage of what the Marketing Club offers:

1: “Get to know the other members of the club. You’ll probably have classes with them at some point, you could find some great new friends, and the networking experience will help you in the future.”

2: “Get involved in club activities; become an officer in the club, attend meetings, and talk to the other people in the audience. Don’t be shy about interacting with the guest speakers. They have given club members their time, experiences, and knowledge and they really care about marketing students.”

3: “As you hear guest speakers, try to relate what they are doing in marketing to what you’re learning in classes. Classes are much more interesting if you can relate it to something you’ll be doing in your career.”

Joyce has done so much for the club these past 15 years, and it has not gone unnoticed. We thank her for these contributions, and she will be greatly missed!

Nolan Donovan graduated in 2016 and was the President of the KU Marketing Club. Today, he works at Big 6 Media as the Director of Search. When asked what he wish he would have known when he was in college, he says that he did not know that many aspects of the hard skills within the marketing sector can be self-taught.

“College doesn’t teach hard skills that apply to digital marketing... and because of this, most people who work in Search Engine Marketing space are self-taught… I joined Big 6 Media mostly talking to clients, but spent a lot of time outside of work reading up on SEO and PPC, and digging around analytics to see what I could learn about “what works”. Because of this leg work, I have been given more opportunities to lead the direction and priorities of my company’s [Search Engine Optimization] practices, projects, and [Pay Per Click] product.”

Nolan has guidance when it comes to setting yourself ahead of the crowd that is looking for a job post-graduation: “Volunteer at a local organization, or become a leader at a student organization. They give you so many opportunities to say “I saw XYZ problem, took ABC action, and as a result the club had YYY benefit.” which is incredible for resumes and interviews. Literally nothing else will put you in a better position to get an internship or job.”

Our next is a very special one, so make sure to be on the lookout for our last spotlight of the year!

Our next : Perla Torres. She graduated from KU in the spring of 2019 and was the VP of Internal Communications for the KU Marketing Club. She now works at Huhtamaki as a Project Manager and Inventory Coordinator, but began her career at the company in Customer Service.

She was attracted to Huhtamaki because she could tell that she fit in with their culture while going through the interview process. Her advice for interviews is to be yourself because it will help you find the right fit. “Try to talk to people that work at the company so you can get a feel for what their work culture is. You will spend most of your time at work so you want to work with people you like and have similarities with,” Perla says.

She wishes that she would have known that people out in the “real world” are struggling just as much with things as college students are: “They're better at making it seem that they have it all figured out, but the truth is we're all just figuring things out as we go.”

We have a couple more Alumni to catch up with, so be on the lookout!

Marina Sarkisova was a member of the club until her graduation in 2017. Today’s works in Dallas, Texas, as an Account Executive for Calise Partners, which just acquired another firm, Imaginuity.

Marina loved being involved with the KU Marketing Club because it exposed her to new opportunities and career paths across the country: “From speakers to trips, I am grateful to have had the opportunity to travel and meet marketers beyond Kansas City. This in turn also pushed me to seek opportunities/internships that would require me to relocate.”

Since leaving Lawrence, she has learned that everyone has their own timeline when it comes to finding a job. She joined Calise Partners seven months after graduation: “Focus on getting something you love or a company you see yourself with. Do not just settle because you think you need a job lined up before you even graduate.”

Marina also encourages people to apply for jobs that are outside of their breadth of knowledge that they acquired at KU. She really wanted a job in creative, which is the typical path that Strategic Communications in the Journalism School take; she did not let her Marketing degree stop her from applying to those types of positions. "If you may not be the perfect candidate for a role," Marina says, “the company will expose you to an opportunity that may challenge you or fit your character better.”

We have one more alumni to catch up with, so stick around for one last !
