On November 28th Native Initiatives held a STEM Networking event in Lawrence, Kansas on the Haskell campus.

The goal of this event was to help create community amongst the local science minority organizations within Lawrence. With a combination of undergraduate students, graduate students, PhD students, science faculty, and supportive faculty in attendance, a meal was provided by the Native chef who made a nutrient dense meal with food original to Indigenous peoples.

He explained his food and followed with a meal prayer for the evening. One person from each of the represented groups (KU & Haskell SACNAS, KU & Haskell AISES, and Haskell Bridge Program) joined the front of the group to share their experiences within STEM, how to navigate while also being a person of color, and any advice they wished to pass on to others.

It’s been snowing like this since 1:00, now 4:15 and doesn’t seem to be letting up. Good thing it’s hovering around freezing.
