Our scholarship and teaching are informed by the basic tenet that language has the power to influence how we perceive the world and how others perceive us. As scholars, we explore how literature has engaged in imaginative ways with the pressing issues of its time, and we examine how discourse and rhetoric enable social engagement and ways of understanding that engagement. As writers, we create the

literature that allows us to consider imaginatively the concerns of times past and present, and the role of writing itself. As teachers, we help our students enrich their understanding of their own society as well as of other cultures by exploring the profound role of stories and storytelling, by collaborating with others from multiple perspectives, and by creating texts that place their own views in conversation with those of others.

Your gifts support research!

In 2025, awarded graduate students Jess House and Emma Webster with the donor-funded William Albrecht Memorial Scholarship for their archival work on an anonymous short story named 'Ithuriel.'

House and Webster were first made aware of 'Ithuriel' during their summer institute course with Austen scholar Dr. Devoney Looser, a visiting professor from ASU. (The summer institute and tuition support for students are also made possible through your donations!)

You can support future research projects by donating today at tinyurl.com/KUEnglishOneDay and read more about House and Webster's work in last year's English Accents linked below.
