Week 1 is in the books and what a week it has been!

Interns started the week learning how to advance their academic and information literacy while also preparing a draft of their research proposal topics through Dr. Brian Lagotte's unique research methods. After a fast paced week, we ended it with a trip to Konza Prairie Biological Research Station.

At Konza, interns learned about soil health from Mikayla Kerron (Prairie Band Potawatomi Environmental GIS Technician/ HERS 2021 Alumni), experienced a rain simulator from the NRCS, discussed TEK/IK with Professor Cody Marshall (HINU IAIS Faculty), and learned from the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) about their terrestrial field site and continuous data networks. They also got to experience a guided tour of the bison loop with Dr. Jesse Nippert, Dr. Lydia Zeglin, and her graduate research assistant Nico!

Annalise Guthrie (HERS 2021 Alumni/ HERS 2022-2023 Mentor) also led interns in a lysimeter workshop at her field sites located at Konza. As part of the EPSoR MAPS grant, lysimeter collection sites have been installed across Kansas. Konza is home to 3 of the 9 lysimeter collection sites in native prairie, cropland, and post-ag/restored areas. Annalise's research utilizes a type of lysimeter that collects soil water, allowing for continual water monitoring of relatively undisturbed soil through probes buried in the ground . Interns helped collect the soil water from the lysimeters!

Just a reminder that our virtual information session will be starting in approximately 30 minutes!

Come join us and learn about this internship opportunity. To be considered for the HERS Internship Program, applicants must be undergraduate students, and in good standing. Applicants are still eligible if graduating in May. Program eligibility is limited to American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders students who are U.S. citizens.
