USM has over 30 majors, minors, and concentrations (on campus and online), along with 24 sports programs plus co-ed cheer and dance, an active campus ministry, and clubs and groups for every interest.

In recognition of her transformational leadership, steadfast commitment to the mission of the University of Saint Mary, and extraordinary legacy of service, the USM Board of Trustees has conferred upon Sister Diane Steele the distinguished title of President Emerita.

For 25 years, Sister Diane led USM with vision, faith, courage, and an unwavering dedication to students. Her leadership helped shape the university’s growth, strengthen its Catholic identity, and expand opportunities for generations of Spires.

Since 2001, Sister Diane Steele has led the University of Saint Mary with faith, courage, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to its mission.

Under her leadership, Saint Mary experienced remarkable growth, expanding academic and athletic opportunities, enhancing campus facilities, strengthening spiritual traditions, and transforming the lives of thousands of students.

But Sister Diane's greatest impact cannot be measured by numbers alone. She knew students by name, celebrated their successes, stood beside them in difficult moments, and led with extraordinary care for every member of the Saint Mary community.

As she retires from the presidency, we honor her legacy of service, leadership, and faith that will continue to shape the University of Saint Mary for generations to come.

In celebration of Juneteenth, the University of Saint Mary reflects on the words and call of Pope Leo XIV in his encyclical Magnifica Humanitas,

"All of us, at every level, can contribute to building the foundation of peace, which is justice. We do not merely seek any kind of peace – such as an absence of conflict at any cost – but instead, the true peace born of justice. Do you therefore wish to attain peace? Then practice justice! Let us never grow weary of seeking justice! (no. 215)"

For those who seek justice and believe in the dignity and worth of all people, we ask you to join together with us on this Juneteenth, to commit to work for peace.
