As an affiliated Seminary of the United Methodist Church, Saint Paul School of Theology affirms its support for the statement issued by the Council of Bishops condemning the violence in Minnesota. Saint Paul upholds Micah 6:8, which calls on us “to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with our God.” The Bishops’ statement reminds us “to work for justice to help heal the brokenness in our communities and in the world.” The violence perpetrated upon the City of Minneapolis and the State of Minnesota does not accord with the basic precepts of justice Micah demands we respect.
The Council of Bishops’ statement draws on the Social Principles of the United Methodist Church, specifically referring to ¶163D’s rejection of governmental coercion and intimidation to silence political opposition. We add our voice to the Council of Bishops’ call for an end to the coercion and intimidation occurring in Minneapolis.
As a community, as a nation, and as a world, we assert that every person has sacred worth and merits the love that Jesus asked us to extend to one another. (Matthew 22:36-40) Saint Paul applauds our Council of Bishops and strives to adhere to the values they have commended to us in their statement. To that end, we call for an end to the violence in Minnesota and an affirmation of the value of every human.
