Winter conditions on Maine lakes can vary widely ❄️.Some lakes develop clear, strong ice when early cold arrives without much snow 🧊. Others form layers of snow ice when snowfall insulates the surface and slows freezing 🌨️. These differences affect everything from ice thickness to oxygen levels and winter habitat for fish 🐟.

Tracking ice and winter conditions helps us understand how lakes change from season to season 🔍📊. Lake associations play an important role in observing these patterns and sharing local knowledge 🤝.

If you are interested in helping your lake, recording ice conditions is a simple way to get involved 🙌. No training is required, and your observations can support long term lake stewardship 💙.

Free Ice Fishing Weekend Coming Up!!

The February fishing report is now available!

We are looking forward to seeing lots of anglers making memories on the ice all month, especially during school vacation week! Find a spot and pick up some tips at mefishwildlife.com/fishingreport.

🎣 February 15-16 is Free Fishing weekend in Maine this year, and is another perfect opportunity to introduce new anglers to the sport! On these days, any person (except those whose license has been suspended or revoked) may fish without a license. All other laws and regulations apply on these days.

🧊Before heading out on the ice all anglers, new and experienced, should review ice safety guidelines at mefishwildlife.com/icesafety.
