Over Spring Break, some of our Anthrozoology students spent time in Belize, combining hands-on fieldwork with cultural and environmental exploration!

At T.R.E.E.S. Field Station and Research Center, students gained practical experience in research methods such as bird banding, bat mist netting, stream ecology, radio telemetry, and species identification, applying what they have learned in the classroom to real-world settings.

The group also participated in a community service project, working with local high school students to improve a shared community space while learning about local culture, music, and food.

The trip concluded at To***co Caye, where students explored marine ecosystems through snorkeling, including a night snorkel to observe nocturnal marine life.

This experience provided a meaningful opportunity to build field skills, engage with a local community, and broaden global perspectives. We are hopeful to continue offering similar opportunities to our students in the future!

For nearly two weeks, Beacon students experienced the adventure of a lifetime on a Wildlife and Birding Safari in South Africa! From exploring diverse regions of the country to spending unforgettable time in Kruger National Park, this trip was truly incredible!

Despite unprecedented rains in the area, wildlife sightings did not disappoint. Students were lucky enough to see elephants, leopards, painted dogs, giraffes, Cape buffalo, and so many more incredible species in their natural habitats. One of the highlights was a night safari, where we got up close with hyenas and other nocturnal animals!

Beyond the wildlife encounters, students also learned directly from Kruger National Park veterinarians about conservation efforts and the challenges of human–domestic animal–wildlife disease conflict, gaining valuable real-world insight into wildlife management and conservation. They also had the opportunity to visit Chimp Eden- The Jane Goodall Institute South Africa, where they met rescued chimpanzees, learned their individual stories, and supported an organization doing vital work in wildlife rescue, rehabilitation, and conservation.

This trip was an unforgettable educational and personal experience, and we couldn’t have asked for a better adventure!

Avery is November's senior of the month! When he is not taking care of our lab birds or his two chickens, you can find him making art or playing games. The bird club president from North Carolina is motivated to work with his feathery friends wherever he is "needed most" after college. If you see Avery around campus, tell him that you appreciate him!

Yesterday, students in our Research Methods class had the incredible opportunity to learn about population sampling methods for fish on Lake Harris with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission!
They explored various types of research that can be conducted using population and species counts, including studies focused on conservation, ecological implications, and potential management solutions. Students also learned how to identify different fish species and determine their age, as well as gained hands-on experience with several sampling techniques.
One of the highlights of the day was assisting with electrofishing, where they successfully caught several impressively large fish species!

Today we’re celebrating all things spooky — especially the often-overlooked heroes of Halloween.
🐍🕷️🦎
To celebrate Halloween, our students gave some of our animals safe, festive “costumes” and learned some fascinating, and just a little spooky, facts about our creepy-crawly friends.

Plus our Insect-Human Interactions class designed a brand-new enclosure for our newest resident — a Venezuelan Greenbottle Blue tarantula!

This week, Mr. Cushing brought his Educating About Animals class to Trout Lake Nature Center in Leesburg. The students explored their indoor and outdoor nature classrooms, hiked around the grounds, examined aquatic macroinvertebrates, and visited their museum along with several animal ambassadors. We also got a behind-the-scenes look at how they host members of the public and K–12 groups, and learned about their approaches to environmental education. Thank you to the educators at Trout Lake for hosting us!

Anthrozoology students recently had the unique opportunity to engage with a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) officer during an on-campus visit. The officer brought along a selection of wildlife, giving students an up-close look at some of the species they may one day help protect.

In addition to the live animal interaction, the officer provided valuable insight into careers with FWC, including day-to-day responsibilities, the training and application process, and what it takes to be prepared for a career in wildlife conservation and law enforcement.

The conversation also touched on current conservation challenges in Florida and the important role professionals play in protecting the state’s diverse ecosystems.
This visit offered an inspiring and informative experience for students interested in bridging their passion for animals with meaningful careers in conservation and public service.

Last Wednesday, our community lost the legendary and groundbreaking primatologist and conservationist Jane Goodall at the age of 91.
Jane not only opened the door for female scientists, but she also fostered an entirely new perspective on the animals she loved so dearly, changing the way scientists studied them. It was Jane who discovered that chimpanzees possess the capacity for tool usage and making, as well as emotions and empathy.
Thank you for everything Jane, and rest in peace.
