Who says Halloween has to be sharp? These photos show the spookiest of lights may be ones out of focus.

Students recently set up a photo shoot to practice Bokeh. Derived from the Japanese word “boke” meaning “blur” or “haze,” Bokeh in photography refers to the aesthetic quality of the out-of-focus or blurry areas in a photograph.

Last week, students in Kristin Bingham’s botany classes TheGarden@SouthPlainsCollege were recognized at the South Plains Fair for their entries in flower pressing. Several students received ribbons and even checks for their entries.

Bingham says this is how botanists are able to keep a record of plant species that have grown in geographical areas. This opportunity is a product of her community partnership with the Lubbock County AgriLife Extension office, which she continues to participate with year after year.

Did you know there is an on-campus student health clinic for sick visits, Covid & flu testing, and even blood pressure checks if necessary?

The Student Health Clinic is located in the Health & Wellness Center on the Levelland campus. Students needing to schedule an appointment can contact the clinic by calling 806-716-2576.

TODAY (Oct. 5) is the last day to register to vote for the November election in Texas. On the ballot are candidates for US Senate, US Representatives, Texas Governor, Texas Lieutenant Governor, Texas Comptroller, and many more.

If you are in Hockley County or Levelland, you can register in person at the elections office, located at 710 Avenue H.

Photography students recently put their “bright ideas” to the test with their light painting project.

Light “painting” is all about leaving a camera’s shutter open long enough for a light source to streak across the front of the camera’s lens.

Students in News Photography, COMM 1316, recently tackled snapping portraits of each other in the blazing morning sun.

Their instructions:
· The classmate being photographed has to stand with their back to the sun.
· No camera flashes are allowed.
· No electrical lights of any kind are allowed.

Their challenge: Use a round light reflector ring to capture the sun and bounce it back onto the face of the person being photographed.

Most students seemed pleased with their overall results. Each of their portraits appear next. Could the reflective light have been brighter? Sure. But you can clearly see each smiling face.
