Jacqueline Shoemaker, of WVSOM’s Class of 2027, was selected for membership in Omega Beta Iota and will be inducted at the organization’s fall 2026 induction ceremony, to take place in October during the American Osteopathic Association’s (AOA) OMED conference in Las Vegas, Nev. She also has been appointed to the Bureau of Federal Health Policy for the AOA and will join them to meet with members of Congress the week of Sept. 14.

Omega Beta Iota is a national osteopathic political action honor society that promotes the role osteopathic medical students and professionals play in shaping health care policy.

Shoemaker is a lieutenant colonel in the West Virginia Air National Guard, national past president of the Student Association of Military Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons, an AOA Leadership Academy cohort member and a 2026 American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Application Service health policy intern. She served as president of WVSOM’s Student Government Association in 2024-25.

A WVSOM student has partnered with members of the school’s faculty and staff to publish a book intended to help children understand a disease that affects about one in 300 people in the U.S.

Kaitlynn Lopes, of WVSOM’s Class of 2027, worked with Kathleen Martin, M.D., a pediatrician and member of the school’s clinical sciences faculty, and illustrator Scott Maxwell, technical manager in WVSOM’s Office of Graduate Medical Education, to publish “Connor Explains Crohn’s,” a picture book intended to destigmatize chronic illness and improve health literacy for children and families.

WVSOM was represented at the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Meeting and Business Summit at The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, WV.

James W. Nemitz, Ph.D., WVSOM's president, joined Ericke Cage, J.D., LL.M., West Virginia State University's (WVSU) president, for a discussion called "Educating the Future: Higher Education's Role in West Virginia's Growth." They highlighted the strengthened partnership that has resulted from the Pre-Osteopathic Medicine Program agreement between the two institutions. The agreement provides a pathway for WVSU students who are interested in pursuing studies in osteopathic medicine at WVSOM.

The West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine welcomed a class of first-year medical students in August, 2026 that includes the largest number of West Virginia residents in the school’s history. The class of 2030 has 210 students, 79 of which live in West Virginia.
