The Alumni Association of CMG/CMMC/MCHP has quite a store of history and memorabilia on hand. It is extraordinary to browse through it and discover a vibrant history with many wonderful memories.
Want to share a dedication in the class of 1995’s yearbook to Joan B. Neal. Also many may remember these instructors the faculty pictured below and can tell us the year.

Here is a story from Megan Carter Murphy '67. In her words . .

The young soldier on the E.R. gurney looked pale. I took his hand and asked, “Are you in pain?” He answered, “My back hurts a little bit.” I responded, “You’re in luck. You’re at the 24 the Evac Hospital and we have the best medical care available in Viet Nam. You’ll be in surgery soon, and we’ll fix you up just fine.”

On arrival to surgery some fifteen minutes later, we performed a “crash induction” with the pale boy still lying on his stretcher. Once “asleep, we log-rolled him onto the OR table. When we turned him over, as one, the entire team took in a short sharp breath, then…silence. We all saw that his back which “hurt a little bit,” was gone. We stood gazing at his kidneys, shattered, bruised and swollen, lying in a hacked and blackened hole which had been cauterized by some unknown hot death that blew away his back and kept him from bleeding to death immediately. Tears came as our eyes met. We knew we could not save this boy. Each knew we were the last voices he would ever hear, the last human kindness he would ever know.

The profound privilege of sharing intimate relationships with people is unique to the nursing profession. Then, in 1969 Viet Nam, as now, during the Pandemic 2020 Nurses have answered the call and been on the frontline holding the lives of our patients in our hands and our hearts, forever.

It was wonderful to see the students of the MCHP marching in the Bicentennial Parade held in Auburn/Lewiston on August 21st. The parade was a year late, due to the virus, but that did not dampen the high spirits of participants or of the hundreds of spectators. Thank you for taking part in Maine’s celebration and for being our future health care professionals.

Pandemic - One Year Later

Our Alumni Association is proud and grateful for the efforts of all nurses during this Pandemic - especially those who are alumni of our School of Nursing who have been working on the front line during the Covid Crises.

You have put your lives at risk to protect all of us and we want you to know that all of your efforts are appreciated - more than you may ever know.

A year ago, in Mid-March 2020, we cancelled our Alumni meeting. It was the beginning of this Pandemic. We still do not know when we can be safely together as a group, but are more and more encouraged with the increase of vaccinations.

It has been a difficult year for all in very many ways. However; it has been a far more difficult for our nurses who have continued to work and to put themselves in harms way. God Bless You All and thank you for all you have done and all you continue to do. Your grateful Alumni Association

Several members of the Alumni Association had the pleasure of meeting 14 students enrolled in the ADN evening/weekend class of 2021 on March 5th, 2019 at the college. We look forward to another visit when we can spend more time with this great group of aspiring nurses. Please note: this is a pre-COVID photo thus no masks and social distancing.

What does a President Emerita of the Maine College of Health Professions do with her well-earned retirement? Turns out she continues to work with nursing students!

Susan Baltrus, class of 1967 served as president of the college for five years before retiring in 2014. At the time her children were concerned about how she would adjust after working 40 to 60 hours a week. However, it didn’t take Sue long to find a new passion, tutoring students in test taking skills three days a week at the college. Sue says that nothing is more rewarding than to see a student you have worked with achieve their personal best and she feels fortunate to share in their nursing journey.
