A.E.S.O.P. (Annual Entering Students Outdoor Program)

A.E.S.O.P. (Annual Entering Students Outdoor Program) AESOP is a completely student run outdoor orientation program for Bates College. This year, we have over 450 first years on 54 student-lead trips.

AESOP was started over 30 years ago by a small group of students from the Bates Outing Club whose mission was to get first-year and transfer students excited about Bates through a rewarding outdoor experience. Since its humble beginnings, AESOP has grown to into the largest (and only remaining!) entirely student-run pre-orientation program in the country. Today, AESOP consists of over 48 separate

trips with 96 volunteer student-leaders, and typically draws in well over 350 members of the first-year class! We run trips for all different levels of ability and interest, and have evolved over the years to create a unique program that offers an experience all entering students can enjoy. The 2013 AESOP Coordinators are:
Allie Balter '14
Josh Sturtevant '14

The 2013 Assistant Coordinators are:
Katie Polio '15
Bryan Lehrer '15
James Brissenden '15

Hey Leaders!
Next Monday (5/13), we will be having a Tent Check Pizza Party at 5:00pm. All the AESOP tents need to be set up and checked so that no trip gets a broken tent this fall! Come hang out, meet the other leaders, set up some tents, and eat pizza!

To make connections, you kinda have to make some moves. In that spirit, as Orientation for the Class of 2020 hit its midway point last week, Bates’ newest students headed out from campus for their outdoor trips, known as the Annual Entering Student Outdoor Program, or AESOP.

Check out this awesome piece on two of our very own former (but not really former because AESOP is forever) coordinators, Sasha Lennon and Natalie R Silver's work in anticipation of their senior art exhibitions!

Sasha Lennon and Natalie Silver admire each other’s honesty and self-confidence. They value each other’s advice. All told, they enjoy one of the great Bates friendships. “It’s almost like we’re dating — we’re not dating,” laughs Silver, of Bennington, Vt., “but I think that we really match each othe…
