It is officially countdown to July 1 — the day a new class of residents begins their journey. 💥🥼

To help ease some nerves, we reached out to a few seasoned UK College of Medicine residents to share advice for incoming doctors. First up is Eric Vogt, a fourth-year family medicine resident with a sports medicine fellowship on the way. 🏀

Eric shares:

“My best piece of advice for a new intern is to be prepared to give yourself some grace. Residency is still very much a time of learning, so no one expects you to know it all. Asking for help is not only acceptable, but it is expected. Allow yourself the space to not have all the answers, and you will be surprised at how much you can grow without even realizing it.”

Eric completed his undergraduate education, medical school, and now residency training at the University of Kentucky. His extended time in Lexington is no accident — it reflects his commitment to continuing to serve the community he has grown to love.

Every stroke case tells a story — and fellows in the Vascular Neurology Fellowship at the UK College of Medicine are training to change outcomes for patients across Kentucky and beyond. 🧠 💙

This month’s Fellowship Spotlight highlights a program built on advanced clinical training, compassionate mentorship, and high-acuity stroke care.

Why fellows choose UK:
• ACGME-accredited program with a 100% board pass rate on the ABPN Vascular Neurology Certification Exam
• Hands-on experience in specialized stroke recovery techniques, including botulinum toxin treatment for post-stroke spasticity
• Advanced neurovascular ultrasound training opportunities preparing fellows for Neurosonology certification

At UK, fellows train alongside multidisciplinary teams including stroke faculty, neurocritical care specialists, APPs, and neuro-interventional experts — all within a culture centered on mentorship, education, and learner well-being.

Serving patients across the Commonwealth means fellows experience an incredible breadth of pathology and patient care! ✨ For the 2026-2027 academic year, the fellowship currently has two open positions.✨

Truly a night to remember as faculty from across the College of Medicine came together to celebrate one another’s achievements, dedication, and heart.

The inaugural FIRE Event recognized several outstanding faculty members while creating space for connection across disciplines. Moments like these are a powerful reminder that while the work is challenging, none of us does it alone. It is our collective commitment to education, research, clinical care, and each other that makes meaningful progress possible.

More than 50 high school students from across Kentucky recently came to the University of Kentucky with one goal in mind: building a healthier future for their communities. 🎗️

At the inaugural Kentucky NextGen Cancer Summit, students connected with cancer researchers, physicians, survivors, and health care professionals to explore careers in oncology and cancer research. Hosted by the UK Markey Cancer Center, the ACTION Program, and Kentucky 4-H Youth Development, the summit is helping inspire the next generation of leaders in cancer care across the Commonwealth.

“The question wasn’t ‘What is the problem?’ or ‘Why should we care?’ It was ‘How can we fix it together?’” shared student participant Jiwoo Kim.

By investing in future scientists, clinicians, and advocates, programs like this are helping transform cancer care in Kentucky for generations to come.

From securing an F31 fellowship while backpacking in Glacier National Park to mentoring her younger brother through the SURES summer program, Evelyn Bates’ PhD journey at the UK College of Medicine has been defined by curiosity, perseverance, and community.

This August, Evelyn will begin a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh, where she will focus on developing personalized treatments for MASLD using patient-derived iPSCs and microphysiological systems. By combining computational expertise with bench research, she is helping shape the future of precision medicine.

“One thing I learned the hard way during my PhD years is that quantity does not always equal quality,” Evelyn said. “Maintaining a level of enjoyment in my work is paramount.”

As she reflects on her time at UK, Evelyn says she will miss the warm environment in DPNS, Lexington summers, and her team at Four Seasons Martial Arts.

Congratulations, Dr. Bates — your future is bright, and your impact is only beginning.
