Colleges and universities are notorious for curtailing student rights, our laws having to catch up to protect students from what is the modern university. Free Speech Zones/Areas, overreaching harassment policies, searching dorms and houses without warrants, and limiting time/place/day of expression, or violating minimum due process rights are many of the grievances that trample student rights. Im
portantly, these are events faced students at our public colleges and universities right here in Kentucky. The Kentucky Student Rights Coalition (KSRC) began in 2015 by students at both Eastern Kentucky University & the University of Kentucky as an organization to galvanize student groups in a principled and nonpartisan manner to stand up for one another’s free speech rights when they faced censorship, free speech zones and discrimination. In 2018, our coalition expanded to over 26 student organizations from most public universities and colleges in Kentucky. In 2019, KSRC members signed a letter and spoke before our state legislative committee in support of the successful passage of the Kentucky Campus Free Speech Act, signed into law March 2019. KSRC is dedicated to protecting the education opportunity that is precious to students across the state. We fight for student rights because we acutely are aware of how the power of education can transform the lives of all Kentuckians. We fight to ensure the the rights of students-open records, first amendment, due process, and right to privacy-are all protected in a meaningful way. We do education projects by collaborating with organizations and student groups across Kentucky to ensure every student knows their rights do not stop at the campus gates. We are actively nonpartisan, indiscriminate, and all unpaid volunteers: our over 36 student groups across Kentucky coming together to stand up for student rights.
