“Through the BBN Tackles Plastic initiative, we are able to find a second life for a material usually thrown away and also support an under-sourced population in the greater Lexington community.” — Shayna Bassi, a communication science and disorders senior University of Kentucky College of Health Sciences

At the start of the spring semester, Shayna pioneered a pilot for BBN Tackles Plastic. A new recycling initiative to collect plastic bags from students in residence halls. Thanks to student support, Shayna collected 850 bags from collection bins located at The Thrifty Cat, Lewis Hall, and University Flats.

We’re excited to announce that BBN Tackles Plastic has expanded to select campus residence halls. Plastic bags can now be placed in location bins located in Holmes, Jewell, Haggin, Donovan and Lyman T. Johnson residence halls.

What happens to the plastic bags that are collected? Shayna leads an on-campus student organization, Sustainable Future Leaders. Students transform the plastic bags to create sleeping mats for Lexington’s unhoused.
