University of Kentucky Student Sustainability Council

The SSC was formed in 2009 to supervise the distribution of the Environmental Stewardship Fee at UK. Kennedy, Jr.

The first major task charged to the SSC was the management of the ongoing Sustainability Lecture Series, which was founded in the fall of 2008. Since taking over the lecture series, the SSC collaborated with the Student Activities Board to bring renowned author and environmental lawyer Robert F. to campus to speak in front of nearly 2000 students, faculty, staff and community members. The spring l

ecture series, which was integrated with the annual Earthdays in the Bluegrass celebration, featured writer-activist Jeff Biggers.

It calls for environmental stewardship as a community effort focused on our health, economic security, and ecosystems. GreenTalks today will feature our last guests of the year: the Bluegrass Youth Sustainability Council! Students from high schools all across Lexington come together at BYSC to learn about sustainability and make real impacts in the community. Four students join us on the show to share their experiences.

SSC members celebrated the end of the academic year with a Spring Retreat at Buckley Wildlife Sanctuary. They participated in team building activities before holding their final meeting of the semester which consisted of a constitution review, five proposals, and director elections.

Thank you to our team of directors for your hard work leading the SSC throughout this year, and congratulations to our graduating seniors! We look forward to meeting more of our new members and continuing our work in the fall.
