Public Health is the best place to start! Public health is the fulfillment of society’s interest in

being healthy. Public health’s mission is to leave the world a healthier place for the next generation. This mission is met through our three core functions: assessment, assurance, and policy development. Furthermore, public health prevents disease, prolongs life, and promotes health for everyone. Our team of public health ambassadors and champions are all making positive, equitable, and redefining change in order to make our communities healthier, safer, and stronger. Meet Maria Morris, a Public Health Nursing Scholar entering her second year at UK. Growing up in Wilder, KY, Maria saw firsthand how access to care can shape a community, and those experiences inspired her to pursue both nursing and public health.

Through the PHNS program, she’s preparing to serve Kentucky through prevention, education, and community‑based care. She’s also stepping into leadership as the incoming treasurer of the Student Public Health Association.

A research team spanning the University of Kentucky College of Public Health, University of Kentucky Pigman College of Engineering, and Kentucky Transportation Center is collaborating with Kentucky state highway safety partners to better understand teen driver crash risk in the Commonwealth.

The team also includes an undergraduate psychology researcher from the UK College of Arts and Sciences, reflecting the truly interdisciplinary nature of this work.

By analyzing teen crash patterns and the factors that contribute to them, this team is building the evidence needed to support young drivers on Kentucky's roads, and demonstrating what is possible when university researchers, students and state partners work toward a shared goal.
