Samantha Price, a Psychology major with a minor in human development and family science from Galena, Ohio, joined the Lewis Honors College (LHC) to surround herself with hardworking students and take advantage of the opportunities, support, and connections it provides. Throughout her time at UK, she found a strong support system that helped shape both her academic and personal growth.

Samantha completed her Honors thesis as a capstone project for both the LHC and the Psychology Scholars Program. She says finishing the project was one of her proudest accomplishments during college. Outside of the classroom, Samantha fulfilled her experiential education credits through the HAMMER (Help-seeking And Multicultural Measurement Evaluation Research) Lab. Her experiences in research and Honors coursework helped her continue to develop interests in psychology and human behavior.

She credits the LHC advisors and priority registration as some of the most valuable parts of her experience, saying those resources helped make it possible for her to graduate in three years. One of her favorite memories from the LHC was taking Dr. Voogt’s Progress and Poverty course during her freshman year, which included a field trip to an Amish auction that left a lasting impression on her.

Samantha says the professors and advisors in the LHC consistently inspired and supported her throughout college. She especially appreciates advisor Nedra McLain for being a major source of encouragement throughout her journey and says she will miss her kindness and support the most.

After graduation, Samantha will attend The Ohio State University to pursue her master’s degree in couples and family therapy!

Her advice to future LHC students is to take advantage of the opportunities available through the LHC, as it is there to support students and make the college experience more manageable and meaningful.

Congratulations to the two recipients of the Founding Dean’s Award for Faculty Excellence in Honors Education, Dr. Julie Boutwell-Peterson and Dr. Kevin Sarge, and to business officer Laura Carter for winning the Staff Excellence Award.

The faculty awards, established in 2023 by Dr. Christian and Elizabeth Brady, recognize faculty who engage students in and outside the classroom, who model lifelong learning through continuous professional and pedagogical development, who foster critical thinking & intellectual inquiry, and who demonstrate excellence in all aspects of their teaching. One award is presented to a Lewis Honors College faculty member, and the other is given to a University of Kentucky faculty member.

Dr. Boutwell-Peterson teaches creative writing and an experiential course on the lives of immigrants and refugees. Nominators praised “her ability to foster empathy and creativity in her classroom,” which in turn led to deeper understanding. Multiple students describe her passion for good writing, her serious attention to their work, and her ability to foster an atmosphere where students are “willing to be vulnerable” and can overcome fear of “negative feedback.”

Dr. Sarge, a molecular and cellular biochemistry professor in the UK College of Medicine, teaches many Honors courses, including Appalachian Health. His nominator said he “never had a kinder, more inclusive professor.” Dr. Sarge begins by making students feel comfortable before introducing challenging, sensitive topics; students discuss things frankly and feel heard in his class. He “balances going into detail while also keeping class fun.”

Laura’s nominator wrote, “Laura is the quiet architecture of the Lewis Honors College. Her business sense and steady hand are the foundation beneath everything we build. Behind the scenes of every successful program, she is the unseen hand ensuring guest speakers are paid, organizations are supported, and supplies are purchased. Her work isn’t designed for the spotlight. It is something rarer: true, selfless service to this community.”

Kate Waterman, a finance major with minors in economics and public policy from Louisville, Kentucky, joined the Lewis Honors College (LHC) to make a large university feel smaller and to connect with like-minded students. Throughout her four years at UK, the LHC gave her a strong sense of community while also introducing her to new perspectives and experiences outside of her major.

For her Honors thesis, Kate explored the implications of strict zoning policies in Lexington on real estate development. The project allowed her to dive deeper into a topic she was genuinely interested in while strengthening her research and communication skills through the process.

One of the highlights of Kate’s time at the LHC was the opportunity to take unique Honors classes that varied her schedule and allowed her to interact with students from diverse academic backgrounds. She says those experiences made her college career more well-rounded and helped her build meaningful connections throughout the Honors community.

After graduation, Kate will move to Atlanta to join JLL Capital Markets as a Debt & Equity Analyst.

She says she will miss the sense of community in the LHC and encourages future students to take advantage of the opportunities available while building genuine connections within the college.

Congratulations to Elizabeth Elliott for receiving the Diachun Scholar Award for her work in biology. Candidates are selected based on their GPA and course rigor at the end of December before their graduating year, as well as breadth of intellectual interest, such as courses in the humanities.

“It is an honor to receive the Diachun Scholar Award — and a surprise on top of that,” Elizabeth said. “I never had a clear goal with my various academic pursuits, save an appreciation for learning more about the way the world works and a deep enjoyment of research. To be selected for this award with the endorsement of my mentor, Dr. Cooper, and to have my efforts recognized in front of the friends and faculty who've supported me along the way — is both humbling and inspiring in equal measure.”

Elizabeth’s nominator emphasized that she has “been prolific in publishing manuscripts, both as co-author and first author. She has represented Dr. Robin Cooper’s research group, the biology department, and UK, exceedingly well at local, national, and international scientific meetings. She always prepares the best posters and oral presentations. She also helps teach middle and elementary school students about key elements of science every summer at UK’s STEMBLUE camp.”

Elizabeth will attend UK College of Nursing this fall. “As a future nurse, I must be able to communicate with patients through personal connections; Lewis Honors College gave me the skills necessary to forge such relationships,” she added.

This award was created in 2019 to honor the first director of the UK Honors Program, Dr. Stephen N. Diachun. The endowment is made possible by the generosity of Karen Kemper Henson ’69 and Jan B. Henson ’69.

Sofia Gomez Gallo, a double major in neuroscience and biology with a minor in pharmacology from Bogotá, Colombia, found a strong sense of community through the Lewis Honors College (LHC). She joined the LHC hoping to find like-minded people, and says it became a place where she made some of her best friends and found people who consistently supported her throughout college.

For her Honors thesis, Sofia focused on the research project she had been working on in her lab. After spending so much time dedicated to the project, she was excited to finally put her work into writing. Although the process was long and stressful at times, she says it helped her gain confidence and confirmed how much she truly loves research.

Sofia fulfilled her experiential education credits through research at UK, further strengthening her passion for science and medicine. She also credits the LHC with helping her think more deeply and improve her critical thinking skills through interesting Honors courses that made core requirements feel more meaningful and engaging.

One of the highlights of Sofia’s experience in the LHC was the sense of community. She says the friendships and support system she found at the college had a lasting impact on her experience, and she especially valued being part of a community where people always showed up for one another. She also loved being a Lewis Launch Leader and wishes she had gotten involved even earlier in her time at UK.

After graduation, Sofia plans to continue working in a research lab before applying to medical school!

Her advice to future LHC students is to fully enjoy their time in the LHC and take advantage of opportunities to get involved early, because those experiences often become some of the most rewarding parts of college.
