2021 Virtual Summer STEM Camp!
Dear Families, School and Community Partners -

We hope this email finds you healthy in your environments right now.

We are excited to announce that we will be able to again do a Virtual STEM Camp this summer! The University of Kentucky, Iowa State University, California State University Long Beach, University of Central Florida, Bellarmine University (Louisville, KY), Auburn University (Alabama), and Bowling Green State University (Ohio) have again collaborated to bring unique, hands-on and engaging integrated STEM experiences to your home three days each week between June 18 and July 1. In this experience, our faculty and STEM teacher leaders will engage your students in hands-on STEM experiences where they will build, create, explore, invent and play in their home environments while virtually collaborating with fellow students in their age range.

Our camp experiences seek to foster an inclusive sense of belonging for each and every participant. We emphasize empathy and collaboration as important tools to build trust, create relationships, and apply STEM concepts to real-world problems and to challenge unjust systems. As facilitators, we strive to bring a strengths-based, student-centered approach so that each and every student feels supported to show their brilliance in STEM.

Unique features of our virtual STEM camp include:
Guided instruction and open-ended, creative activities that tap into student interest and cultivate increased knowledge and love for STEM in unique, hands-on ways.
Instruction is provided by University Faculty, Graduate Students, and Preservice Teachers in a collaborative fashion - allowing your student to be engaged with other students their age and allowing students to interact with STEM faculty with little oversight needed by an adult.
Friday, June 18 and Friday, June 25 will feature a LIVE tour and interview with an engineer and astronaut from NASA! Students will be able to ask questions, get live answers and a live look inside real STEM facilities.

We are excited to collaborate together to provide this unique opportunity during a time where we can’t be together physically on our campuses!

The UK STEM Ed Department has arranged to make the film Picture a Scientist available for anyone in the University of Kentucky community to view. This film is quite moving (and upsetting, so be prepared for the possibility of a strong emotional reaction).

“PICTURE A SCIENTIST (https://www.pictureascientist.com) chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we encounter scientific luminaries - including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists - who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.”

Licensed viewers will be able to watch the film on the Vimeo streaming platform anytime between 5 PM on Monday, January 4th through 5 PM on Wednesday, January 6th. The license to view the film is free, but you must register at https://forms.gle/S9oaQZRn2W4r6qYV6 and provide your name and email address to receive your license.
