Many students in the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s plant and landscape systems major partner with Nebraska Athletics, applying classroom concepts to the daily demands of collegiate sports turf management.

Most of the turfgrass students working with Nebraska Athletics began the program in their first semester on campus. For these students, the experience has provided far more than a campus job. It has become an extension of the classroom and, in many cases, a pathway into the turfgrass industry.

“Working at Nebraska Athletics has provided our students with valuable opportunities to expand their knowledge of the turf industry,” Anne Streich, a professor of practice in agronomy and horticulture, said. “Prior to this experience, many had only worked in the golf industry.”

Residence halls that housed students during the academic year become temporary homes for thousands of campers, athletes, researchers and conference attendees from around the world.

“We sort of go from being a giant apartment complex to being a giant resort, so we’re a little more hospitality, short-stay oriented,” Kristine Olson said. “We want particularly youth, but everyone, to feel welcome, to feel like it’s a place for them and a place they’re safe to do whatever activity they came to campus to participate in.”

Hello New Husker 👋

Ava Joyce is from Cozad, Nebraska. She is planning to join the CASNR community as an animal science major pursuing pre-veterinary medicine.

"I have always loved caring for animals since a young age, whether that be through my own animals or shadowing at the clinic. My grandparents had a ranch up in Bassett, Nebraska, and their stories have inspired me to the fullest to pursue animal science on the pre-veterinary track."

Her goal is to become a veterinarian and entrepreneur based in Western Nebraska.

To Ava, being part of the Husker community means you are one big family.

"Coming to to CASNR was a no brainer for me. I have been a Husker since I was born. Coming to East Campus really felt like home. The community feels like a family, and I am so excited to continue my education in the Animal Science Department and with the Engler Agribusiness Entreprenuership Program. Go Huskers!"

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln Crops Judging Team placed fifth in the nation at the annual North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture Crops Judging Contest held April 22–25 and hosted by Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. Team member Gabrielle Clifton placed eighth individually.

Garrett Kuss said he believes that through both competition and industry tours, the Crops Judging Team gives students the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge, meet agricultural professionals, explore career paths and build connections with their student peers across the country. For students interested in agronomy, food systems, agricultural technology or professional development, the team provides a valuable way to learn, travel and grow beyond the classroom.

Twenty-one students from across the Cornhusker State have been selected for the newest cohort of the Nebraska Elite 11 Veterinarian Program.

“Nebraska agriculture and rural communities depend on strong veterinary leadership,” said Tom Burkey, interim dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. “Programs like Elite 11 help us invest in talented students who are passionate about animal health, food systems and serving communities across Nebraska. These students represent the future of veterinary medicine in our state.”
