This is Julian’s Story ✨
When Julian was just six months old, he had his first bout of pneumonia. A nurse looked at him and said, “That’s what we call a happy wheezer.” That phrase has stuck ever since because it perfectly captures who Julian is, happy-go-lucky, resilient, and full of light. You would never know what he has been through unless you heard his health history.
Julian lives with severe persistent asthma and Specific Antibody Deficiency (SAD). He was diagnosed with asthma at two years old, but finding the root cause of his constant illnesses took years. Nearly every sickness settled in his lungs, pneumonia, RSV, bronchitis, croup, even strep once turned into pneumonia. As he grew older, illnesses lasted longer and treatments became more intense. Frequent steroid use helped him breathe but began to impact his growth, and his family knew something had to change.
In the summer of 2019, Julian traveled to Denver for extensive testing at National Jewish Health. Despite spending days in the hospital, he still calls it one of his favorite trips, a true testament to his spirit. After weeks of evaluation, doctors recommended IVIG infusions. With the support of his care team back home, Julian began monthly treatments in October 2019, continuing until August 2023.
While IVIG reduced infections, he eventually transitioned to weekly subcutaneous gamma globulin therapy when his veins could no longer handle frequent infusions. His immune levels are looking strong, though he still faces challenges, including a recent pneumonia scare and growth delays from years of steroid treatment. With support from his endocrinologist, he is working to jump-start his growth and stay healthy.
Today, Julian is thriving. He started high school, joined marching band, participates in activities, and even made the honor roll as a freshman. Now a sophomore, he continues to show what resilience looks like every single day.
