We had fun planting trees for UNL Tree Campus USA! ASLA 2019 will always have their mark at Architecture Hall from the 6 Slender Silhouette Sweetgum trees in the south parking lot. Even our director Mark Hoistad got his hands dirty! Thanks for the donuts Eileen!

Year-long landscape architecture intern Austin Arens has spent the past 8 months working for Kimley-Horn and Associates in their Sarasota, FL office. The 60-person inter-disciplinary office consists of civil, structural, and wastewater engineers as well as 2 project manager-led studios with a total of 14 landscape architects and planners.
This past week all of the office’s landscape architects visited one of the their major park projects under construction in Naples, Florida. The 15 acre – 12 million dollar Baker Park project, built on a brownfield waste dump, consists of bike/walking trails, multiple playgrounds, an amenity center, kayak and boat launches, a riverside yoga patio, and a 35 foot tall knoll which allowed most of the contaminated soil to stay onsite. Visiting allowed the landscape architects to see the installation of pavement, palm and shade trees, concrete formwork, and heavy earthwork and grading.

Nebraska Alumnus Michael Killeen and Intern Jerry Philbin of Land3 Studio work together on a design for a proposed Mental Health Hospital located in Florida. The 14 acre site includes an entrance condition that frames views into the building as well as an organized landscaped pattern that relates to the local culture and history. The design also incorporates a "mental health garden" that provides an outdoor area for patients to relax and meander. Jerry was in charge of the researching mental health, culture, and history for the surrounding area. He then worked with Michael to translate that information into a design that functions with the site and its users.
