What appears to be a small metal briefcase sits on a table among several sculptures of houses, animals, and plants. It’s not something you would typically associate with welding, with copper straps and real latches and hinges holding it closed. When opened, inside is a model record player, complete with a needle, dials, and a metal record that spins.

Ayden Kaps had been tinkering on his welding sculpture since October, and put in over 150 hours on it. It doesn’t play music, but it didn’t have to for judges at the Nebraska State SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Conference to give him a gold medal.

“I’m aware of my abilities, I’m a decent welder. So why not make something fun? I really enjoy making cool stuff.”

Fixing cars practically runs in Claire and Emma Uhler’s blood. They’ve spent their whole lives in shops and around project vehicles, so it only made sense that they both attended Southeast Community College, where Claire pursued her A.A.S. in Automotive Technology and Emma pursued her A.A.S. in Auto Collision Repair Technology.

“I definitely cannot imagine going to SCC and going to my program if my sister had not chosen to also go here and go through a similar program,” Claire said. “It has been such a joy to experience that together. We get to see each other at lunch, get to see each other after class. And what's been really exciting is that I get to share with her some of the things I've learned in my program throughout the day, and then I get to hear that from her.”

The sisters, two thirds of a set of triplets, spent two years at SCC pushing each other to be the best version of themselves. While Claire finds herself looking under the hood often, and Emma is usually trying to fix a cosmetic issue, their work does crossover sometimes.

“We both deal with advanced driver assistance systems. We both deal with radiators and cooling systems. There's some of those things we can have conversations about. I can talk to her and understand her automotive issues, and she can understand my finishing issues. It's kind of a neat way to be similar, but still unique.”

In the small town of Neepawa in Manitoba, Canada, Hayden Delaloye was first handed a golf club at two years old. His father and grandfather both enjoyed golf, and 16 years later he followed that passion at Southeast Community College, where he leads the golf team.

“They’re super proud of me. My dad and grandpa really got me into this sport and my family is very supportive of my golf career and my college career.”

Delaloye is pursuing his A.A.S. in business, which he will use to transfer to a four-year college to continue playing golf. SCC provided a cheaper option for him to adjust to the life of a college athlete before pursuing a bachelor’s degree.
