Astronomy Outreach at UNL

Astronomy Outreach at UNL Science is best learned when you get to make the discovery yourself! Schedule our exciting FREE physics & astronomy shows! Suggested age range is 8 - 14.

We're an outreach program at UNL that provides hands-on activities to kids all around Lincoln. Check out our public calendar for current events:
http://events.unl.edu/?calendar_id=2234

Also, come visit the 16-inch domed telescope on campus! More info at http://astro.unl.edu/observatory/

The SEPPO (Science & Education Partnerships in Public Outreach) program at UNL has a long-standing history of

success and has been funded by NASA. We offer free 1-hour astronomy and physics 'shows' that focus heavily on student interaction and hands-on activities, so that children can experience science firsthand. The current presentations are:
*Static Electricity
*Optics
*Intro to the Night Sky
*Planets
*Dangers From Space
*Squishy Circuits
*Sound & Music
*Exoplanets

For more information, check out our website:
http://astro.unl.edu/seppo/

The program is supervised by Dr. Kevin Lee and the presentations are conducted by undergraduate students in physics and education.

Another public night at the observatory is this Friday! 7:30-10pm, weather permitting. Come see some sky!

02/20/2014

Don't forget that the observatory is open this Friday! 7:30-10pm, on top of the Stadium Drive garage on campus at the intersection of 10th & T. Weather permitting, of course.

Note: there was a typo in the The Daily Nebraskan about us last week - the article was supposed to be about the STUDENT Observatory, here in Lincoln, not Behlen Observatory, which is way out in Meade, Nebraska.

Spring observatory hours have been established! Check out the banner above.

Comet ISON is finally visible to the naked eye, but looks better through binoculars. It's very low on the east-southeast horizon - it will get dimmer as it rises unfortunately. http://waitingforison.wordpress.com/november-2013/

The famous Comet ISON is nearing its closest approach to Earth. Check out this neat diagram of how close it gets! Stay tuned to our Twitter for an upcoming special observatory night to view this comet... we'll know more as it comes closer, will most likely have the night in December.

Since Comet ISON was discovered so far out, beyond the orbit of Jupiter, and will pass so close to the Sun, many think that this could turn out to be a major comet.

The Student Observatory is scheduled to be open for public night this Friday 8:30-11pm. However, weather forecast is not good. Check our Twitter for updates closer to the day.

Both the Behlen Observatory (in Mead, 40 mi away) AND the Student Observatory (in Lincoln, on top of Stadium Dr Parking Garage) are open tonight! Behlen 7:30-10, Student 8:30-11. Behlen offers extremely dark skies the better to view deep sky objects with while the Student O offers the convenience of being local but focuses on the Moon & planets because of brighter skies. Come check one or both of us out tonight!

Observatory hours for this semester are up on the UNL Observatory website - note, we are NOT Behlen, we are the STUDENT Observatory on campus in Lincoln.

Clouds and precipitation greatly decrease our offerings on public nights. Behlen Observatory will be open on public nights regardless of the weather and at least one presentation will be given. Visitors will be able to see the 30-inch telescope but will not be able to view astronomical objects throu...
