Mallory Heinbaugh wanted to go through her college career the quick way: one short year of cosmetology school. But God had different plans. To Mallory, Union was a familiar place. Her mom and grandpa had attended, and her high school, Maplewood Academy, made frequent trips to the campus. But Union didn’t offer what she wanted. Why waste four years when she could be done in one?
“I did decide to come to Union because my mom was like this will be good for you," Mallory said. "After my first year, I realized it was literally the best decision I could have ever made. The first year was definitely more difficult, but once I got into the second and third year, I was fully into it. Everything about this place is amazing to me. I'm going to miss this place.”
Mallory graduated with a degree in Business Administration, with an emphasis in marketing and small business management. With the help of her degree from Union, her dream of making women look and feel beautiful has expanded to include the possibility of opening her own business. Although nothing that Mallory has learned will directly help her style hair, going to school at Union has equipped her with tools, lessons, and friendships that will last a lifetime.
When asked what she is most passionate about in life, Mallory said, “Building connections with people, and serving others. Not necessarily in the mission trip way, but more of, like, I want to be there for people when they need somebody to talk to or when they need a meal or things like that…if you were to come and tell me, I just had a terrible test, I want to sit down and pray with you.”
Mallory’s passion for service shines through in all the leadership roles she has taken on. She has done everything from BCS marketing and communications director to family worship coordinator to TA and student leader in the business program. “I think He's preparing me to spread who He is to the greater population, and to be able to serve other women to make them feel beautiful and cared for,” Mallory said. As she leaves Union to resume her dream to work in cosmetology with “postgraduate” studies at the Entourage Institute of Beauty and Esthetics, she is taking with her a desire to serve the world. She can see now that Union was a necessary step in God’s plan for her and not just a detour.
