UNL Global Studies

UNL Global Studies Official page for Global Studies program at University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Let curiosity move you. They make names for themselves around the globe.

In UNL’s Global Studies program, we produce well-rounded, international citizens capable of navigating, translating, doing business, and improving conditions across borders, oceans, and cultures. We prepare our students to not only excel in an increasingly connected, complex and ever-changing world, but to change it for the better. In UNL’s top-notch facilities and our tight-knit classes, and by g

etting involved in study groups and the E.N. Thompson lecture series, our students become part of a dynamic community of impact makers and lifelong travelers. They gain unique perspective and broad knowledge of peoples, places and practices by experiencing them firsthand. Here, education abroad isn’t an option — it’s a requirement. Our graduates speak at least two languages, and work in places such as the American Embassy and for state senators on international operations.

The Center for Academic Success and Transition (CAST) is a campus resource focused on supporting students as they navigate the academic and personal demands of college. Their office offers resources such as Academic Success Coaching to support graduate student success during their time at UNL.

Through one-on-one coaching, we work with students on things like:

Time management and weekly structure — figuring out how to realistically plan your time
Prioritizing and managing long-term projects — breaking big goals into workable steps
Work/life balance and stress management — building habits that feel sustainable, not exhausting
Talking through advisor/PI relationships, imposter feelings, and academic pressure — with a neutral, confidential coach outside your department

Coaching is personal, judgment free, and focused on helping students succeed in ways aligned with individual needs rather than a single approach.

If you would like to meet with a CAST Coach, you can schedule a session here: https://success.unl.edu/academic-support/coaching/

If you want to learn more about CAST, you can do that through their website: https://success.unl.edu/

The mission of CAST Coaching is to empower students to thrive academically, personally, and professionally. Through personalized support and guidance, our coaches help students discover their strengths and overcome challenges on the path to success in order to reach their full potential.Schedule a C...

The Institute for International Teaching Assistants will be held in person from August 3-14, 2026. This 2-week program is designed to prepare international students for teaching in American classrooms.

Students will have teaching training, language courses, and microteaching sessions to practice their teaching skills. International students who will have TA appointments in the fall are expected to complete the program before they teach. Academic Departments are responsible for registering eligible students. This is a valuable opportunity for international students with teaching responsibilities to help them understand the academic environment and cultural norms of US classrooms.

Please contact Lisa Rohde at [email protected] with any questions or to get the registration link.

To make course materials review easier, instructors planning Fall 2026 courses are invited to share a syllabus or reading list with the Successful Teaching with Affordable Resources (STAR) Team at [email protected]. In a recent UNL pilot, 89% of participating instructors discovered lower-cost options for selected course materials. Within a few weeks of receiving a syllabus or reading list, a member of the STAR Team will share options to consider, which may include Inclusive Access, library-licensed, and openly licensed materials. Sharing a current syllabus or reading list is enough to get started and does not commit an instructor to making changes.

For more information about these programs, see the Affordable Content Faculty Guide (https://pressbooks.nebraska.edu/facultyaffordablecontent/ ) or email STAR ([email protected] ).

Today, we celebrate the anthropologists, researchers, and changemakers stepping forward 🎓✨

To our graduate students in Anthropology (and Global Integrative Studies), your work has gone far beyond the classroom. You’ve conducted fieldwork, contributed to forensic investigations, and deepened our understanding of what it means to be human 🌍🔍 Your research tells stories that matter, and those stories will shape the future.

As you begin your next chapter, carry this with you:

“The purpose of anthropology is to make the world safe for human differences.” — Ruth Benedict

The world needs your perspective, your rigor, and your commitment to understanding humanity in all its complexity now more than ever 🌎❤️ Whether in the field, the lab, or the communities you serve, keep asking questions, listening deeply, and making meaning 💡🤝

We are incredibly proud of all you’ve accomplished and can’t wait to see the impact you’ll make next 🎉

What if your semester took you here? 🌸🍣🚄🗼🎌

For MJ Jabbar, that’s not hypothetical, it’s real life.

The global studies major is spending the semester in Saitama, Japan as one of the first Huskers in a brand-new exchange program. From navigating daily life in a new culture to building language skills and friendships, he’s getting a firsthand look at the future he wants to build.

“I ultimately want to work in Japan…this is an incredible opportunity.”

This is what global studies looks like.

Would you study abroad in Japan? 👇

This fall, take a deep dive into migration with Dr. Julia Reilly. You’ll explore why people move, how refugee and asylum systems work, and what migration means for both newcomers and host communities.

This course goes beyond the classroom, students collaborate with local migration professionals in Lincoln and engage directly with real-world issues.

Two students. One reality:

They’ve done everything right, and still might have to leave university.

From Lincoln to Ethiopia 🌍, UNL alumnus Zach Garfield (BA ’12, Anthropology & Psychology) co-directs the Omo Valley Research Project, supporting students from one of the most remote regions in Southwest Ethiopia.

Right now, they’re facing a difficult truth:
There are more qualified students than funding available.

Students like aspiring veterinarians, future healthcare workers, and first-generation university students are working to build careers that directly serve their communities—but many are at risk of stopping out simply because they can’t afford to continue.

And when support comes through, the impact reaches entire communities:

✨ Students training in medicine and public health to serve regions with little access to care
✨ Future veterinary professionals supporting pastoralist livelihoods
✨ First-generation university students returning home with skills that didn’t exist before

This is what’s at stake.

💛 $82 = one month of education
💛 $975 = an entire year
💛 100% goes directly to students

If you’re going to give, this is the moment it matters most.
