Congratulations to our May 2024 Honors graduates! This group of graduates have made an impact on the Honors Program during their time at UNL. There isn’t enough time to spotlight every graduate, but we would like to share their commendable achievements:

• 197 Honors graduates from 56 different majors.

• 160 of those degrees—or a whopping 81%—were earned with distinction, high distinction, or highest distinction from their colleges.

• As a class, this group earned a collective college GPA average is 3.87, which they have earned while completing over 28,000 college credit hours, over 6600 of which were Honors hours.

• 26 graduates have maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA throughout college, reaching the elite status of Chancellor’s Scholar.

• 16 graduates are the first person in their family to complete a 4-year degree.

• 4 graduates were recognized among all peers on campus as Student Luminaries or through the SLICE Student Impact Awards – the leaders who shine brightest, lighting the path for others’ success. Additionally, several were finalists and honorable mentions for these awards.

• 14 graduates were selected for membership in the highly-competitive senior Honors societies, Mortarboard, the Innocents Society, and Phi Beta Kappa.

• 36% of graduates participated – often in leadership roles – in an Honors Program student organization or community program, and 75% of graduates participated in other student orgs – often leading those groups.

Over spring break, Honors students facilitated an engaging CityBuild 2040 experience for Calvert and Hartley elementary students. After several years running the program in Greater Nebraska, bringing CityBuild 2040 to Lincoln meant students could create and build model cities of the future Lincoln.

Madalynn Janousek, a second-year economics major, said, “CityBuild is an amazing experience to work hands-on with local elementary students to help them think about what their future city could look like.”

Students built structures and resources, such as factories, grocery stores, and schools. Through mentorship and collaborating with Honors students, students learned to use recycled resources and explored their creativity.

CityBuild 2040 typically runs during fall and spring breaks. Follow our Instagram to stay updated for future CityBuild opportunities.

Sidney Wickham is a second-year student majoring in History and Anthropology with a minor in Architecture. This semester, she is earning Honors credit by working for Dr. Laura Muñoz in the History Department. Her research focuses on Mexican-American segregation and the role of schools and teachers within that history.

Sidney shared, "We are seeking to solve the question: What are all the different Mexican-American schools and teachers in the past? Mexican-American history has long been forgotten, so bringing the information in one place would help more people understand what school and their lives were like."

Her dedication to her academic and career goals has helped her gain opportunities within Honors and her career. Sidney has plans to go to Tuscany and Rome for an archaeological field school this summer to gain more hands-on learning and research experiences. She added, "I am always trying to go above and beyond in my studies, and having experiences like this means a lot to me."

As the clock ticks towards , we want to share students’ global experiences that will thrive thanks to your contribution to .

Our students are involved on campus and in the community through many opportunities from the Honors Program. However, they are also able to learn globally and engage in new communities. They can immerse themselves in different cultures and enhance their education outside of the country because of Honors Global Experiences.

“My trip to Costa Rica was an incredible experience! I had a fantastic time learning about the Costa Rican healthcare system through various visits to hospitals and clinics. I had so much fun exploring the country whether it be going to museums or visiting the rural countryside. The knowledge I obtained from this trip will be integral to my future.” - Hayley Moree

Over the last year, the Honors Program has provided faculty-led experiences in countries such as Costa Rica and the Czech Republic. With your support during this year’s Glow Big Red, you can fund scholarships to help Honors students pursue an experience that will shape their college journey.

Starting February 14th at noon, will kick off! You can visit: https://glowbigred.unl.edu/organizations/nebraska-honors-program

It’s week! That means that all week long, we’ll be highlighting various aspects of the experience!

Today we're sharing the Honors Afterschool Clubs, which place Honors students in schools throughout Lincoln (and Greater Nebraska) to lead innovative programming and meet a community need.

Not only do Honors students gain valuable experience and develop skills like creative problem solving, communication, and adaptability, but they also get to share topics they're passionate about, from music, to art, to STEM or even D&D!

Shown here are photos from the fall semester's STEM Club at Riley Elementary, led by Honors students Spencer Knight and Rohan Tatineni. By donating to during , you can support Honors Afterschool Clubs and other experiential learning opportunities.
