"This summer I spent 9 weeks in the renaissance city of Florence, Italy. I had the opportunity to do a journalism internship with a language school, and I gained so many meaningful educational experiences.

In Italy, I experienced an intentional lifestyle by enjoying long lunch breaks and visiting as many museums as possible. I was able to travel all across Italy and immerse myself into the nation’s rich and diverse cultural tradition. My time abroad was really challenging at times, and I learned a lot about myself and my future."

Ashley Lopez shared her thoughts and some pictures from her study abroad experience in Spain.

"This summer, I had the opportunity to intern at AIL Español in Madrid, Spain. AIL is a linguistic institution that welcomes student groups from all around the world. During my internship, I worked behind the scenes with the financial department while also being part of the post-sales team, where I engaged directly with groups to help ensure they had the best possible experience during their time in Madrid.
Outside of my internship, one of my favorite parts of living abroad was watching the World Cup games and making friends from around the world along the way. I attended my first soccer game and declared myself a Real Madrid fan 🫶"

Emmanuel Westra, a fourth year Donaghey Scholar, was able to spend his entire Spring semester in France. Here is his experience in his own words.

"This past spring semester, I had the rare opportunity to go abroad to Lyon, France, where I studied at Lyon Catholic University. I traveled to great places in my free time, such as Avignon, Paris, and Beaujolais. In the French Alps, I went snowshoeing with friends and ice skating for the first time at an alpine village! Experiencing French culture and the educational system was irreplaceable and offered me distinct perspectives.

I was delighted by traditional French éclairs and other pastries at the local pâtisseries. There's no substitute for fresh artisan bread from a boulangerie. I recommend the Chaos Danse Festival and seeing French comedies. A memorable gem was the traboules which are secret passageways. Going forward, I plan to explore local festivals and theatre in Little Rock.

Read what fourth year Donaghey Scholar Kaden Owens had to say about his amazing study abroad experience.

"Over the summer, I had the opportunity to live in the heart of Rome. While there, I studied Greek/Roman Mythology and On-Site Roman Archaeology at AUR. As a STEM student, I was grateful for the chance to take some time away from math to study the humanities. In my classes, I had the opportunity to see various dig sites and museums throughout Rome, including the Forums and the Colosseum, an ancient Domus, the Mithraeum, the Capitoline, and more. With my program, I was able to travel to Florence, Sorrento, Capri, Chianti, and Pompeii. These trips gave me the chance to see art and history I’ve read about for years but never seen, which was such a fulfilling thing. It was an incredible experience, and I’m so grateful for all of the places I got to go, all of the art I got to see, all of the food I got to taste, and all of the incredible people I got to meet."

Third year Donaghey Scholar Ella Campbell go to do some great exploring which visiting Peru for her study abroad program. Here are her thoughts.

"I spent May and June in Cusco, Peru where I studied Environmental Science along with Peruvian culture. I also volunteered at an after school program for children where I helped with homework and showed off my soccer skills (and subsequently learned that I am very bad at soccer).
When I wasn't at school or volunteering, I was travelling around the country to many awesome places like Machu Picchu, Huacachina, and the Quelccaya Glacier.

My experience studying abroad in Peru was nothing short of amazing. I was able to immerse myself in the culture by living with a host family and working in the community, taking excursions across the country, figuring out the public transportation system, and making friendships with both the people I met in my education program and those I met throughout my travels.

This time abroad truly has taught me so much and expanded my understanding of the world, my educational goals, and myself. I'm so grateful that I had the opportunity to study abroad this summer!"

Senior Donaghey Scholar Cassie Smith had an amazing trip to Prague, Czech Repulbic! Here is what she had to share in her own words.

“My study abroad experience in Prague, Czech Republic, was truly unforgettable. Being immersed in Prague’s history, culture, and everyday life felt almost magical, and I loved getting to experience it alongside my close friend. We also had the opportunity to travel to Bratislava, Slovakia; Vienna, Austria; and Lake Bled, Slovenia, each specific and unique in what they offer.

While in Prague, I studied psychology with a focus on the Czech psyche and how the country’s history has shaped its customs, traditions, and everyday life. I learned so much about the Czech people and loved seeing how what we studied connected to our everyday experiences while abroad. Being able to learn about psychology while actually living within the culture we were studying made the experience especially meaningful, and I feel incredibly grateful that I was able to call Prague home this summer.

More than anything, this experience gave me memories I’ll carry with me forever. From exploring beautiful places, trying new things, and experiencing different cultures, I’m incredibly grateful that I had the opportunity to see a little more of the world and experience it with someone I care about.”

Donaghey Scholar Christian Morrison had quite an experience through his study abroad program in the Netherlands. Here it is in his own words.

"I studied abroad at Maastricht University in the Netherlands. In Maastricht, I went on a tour of the limestone mines at St. Peter's hill and tried several dishes local to Limburg. I visited Amsterdam, where I saw Body Worlds, the Rijksmuseum, and the Westerkirk (where Rembrandt was buried). I also visited Antwerp, where I saw the Chocolate Nation museum, visited the Het Steen castle, toured the plantin-moretus museum, and walked in the botanical gardens. In Brussels I saw the Pointe du Arte, the city cathedral, and the town square filled with guild halls as well as buying authentic belgian frites and chocolate. I saw the cathedral and town hall of Aachen, and also got to see the throne of Charlemagne in person. In Cologne I met with a friend and went to the top of the Triangle building, saw the city cathedral, and went to the botanical gardens. I also visited another friend in Hengelo and stayed with him for a short time. The program also took us to see Zaanse Schans, a UNESCO world heritage site in Zaandam."
