The Department of Genetic Counseling offers a Master of Science degree in Genetic Counseling through the College of Health Professions at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. The curriculum integrates the science of genetics and genomics with the knowledge, counseling, research and communication skills needed to ethically and effectively deliver genetic counseling services in diverse clinical settings.

Today we are highlighting Alise Blake, EdD, MS, CGC and her accomplishments!

Alise graduated in 2019 from the UAMS Genetic Counseling Program and currently works in pediatric oncology.

She is super involved in the program with roles including clinical supervisor, thesis advisor, thesis committee member, guest lecturer, co-instructor for counseling class, board review course guest instructor, and advisory board member.

Alise recently defended her doctoral dissertation titled, “Genetic Counselors with Doctorate Degrees: Career Profiles Based on level of Education.” She will graduate from the University of Memphis in May with her Doctor of Education in Higher Education!

🎓 Where I got my undergraduate degree: Anderson University (B.S. in Biology and minor in German Studies!)

🧠 Other UAMS Involvement: LEND Program

🩸 Interested in: Hematology, Pediatrics

💡Special interests in genetics: Hematologic conditions and spreading awareness of genetic counseling as a profession

🥍 Outside of school: “I am an assistant coach for Mount St. Mary’s girls’ lacrosse. I also love trying new restaurants and traveling to new places.”

🦬 Fun fact: “I am a huge Buffalo Bills fan, and my favorite book is The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch.”

❤️ Favorite thing about UAMS: “I love the community that UAMS has built into its program & with alumni. I really wanted to find a place that fostered academic growth, but also a compassionate place to develop as a person, which is what UAMS provides.”

🤩 STUDENT RESEARCH DAY RECAP! 🤩

Congratulations to all our second year students on presenting their thesis posters! We are so very proud of their dedication and commitment to these projects, which they have been working on since the very beginning of training (WOW!). The breadth and depth of their topics showcases the many opportunities for genetic counseling research. 🧬💛

We also want to highlight two students for their remarkable 3-Minute Thesis presentations: Melissa Wild and Emily Claire Coates. We commend them for challenging themselves to communicate their projects and its significance concisely and effectively!

Today is Rare Disease Day! 🦓

Did you know that over 300 million people worldwide live with a rare disease? 72% of these diseases are genetic, and 70% of these genetic rare diseases begin in childhood.

🧬As genetic counselors, we have the privilege of serving this community closely, walking alongside families on their diagnostic journeys. We honor them today!

💡Special interests in genetics: “I am very passionate about advocating for the Hispanic/Latino community. I want to give back in any way I can and that includes ensuring patients are well supported.”

📺 Outside of school: “I love to read and watch movies/shows my friends say I NEED to watch!”

✈️ Fun fact: “I love traveling to El Salvador to visit family (fingers crossed I get to go this year). I also love going to concerts with my friends!”
