UAMS College of Nursing The College of Nursing, a CCNE accredited institution, provides baccalaureate, master’s, DNP and PhD programs to over 600 students.

Newborn Screening is one of the most successful public health programs in the United States. In Arkansas, babies are screened for over 35 rare genetic conditions, as well as hearing conditions and critical congenital heart disease.

The goal of the newborn screening program is to screen every baby to detect these rare conditions and decrease the morbidity and mortality risks associated with them.

For the newborn screening program to be as effective as possible, newborns must be screened in a timely manner so that treatment can begin early, if necessary. Many affected infants look perfectly healthy, don’t show any signs or symptoms, and may not have family histories of the conditions that are screened for. Without early diagnosis and treatment, the conditions can cause severe consequences such as illness, developmental issues, or even death. Treatment may include medication, dietary changes, clinical procedures, or monitoring carefully for illness. Through this simple screening, babies can thrive and live healthy lives.

A big thank you to all the team members that are involved in the newborn screening process. From the completion of the screenings and collection of confirmatory labs to follow-up care with specialty providers, everyone plays a part in making a difference in a baby’s life!

Childhood Struggles Inspire College of Nursing Student’s Passion for Helping Others

July 24, 2026 | Although Malayah Lee has excelled in the classroom for most of her life, she notes that none of her academic achievements have come easily.

“It hasn’t been a linear progression,” said Lee, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) student in the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Nursing.
