The BSW program is committed to the values of diversity, human rights, and social justice. With this value base, we educate our students in the knowledge, values, and skills necessary for generalist practice within our diverse population and prepare students for graduate and lifelong learning. Students in the BSW program are educated as generalist practitioners and are able to:
• Engage in general

ist practice at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels;
• Engage in culturally affirming practice with diverse populations;
• Engage in practice that is consistent with the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics;
• Evaluate individual, group, and community practice;
• Identify client strengths and challenges;
• Utilize the knowledge of human development in a social environment to guide assessment, intervention, and evaluation;
• Advocate and promote social justice;
• Advocate on behalf of policy change;
• Contribute to the knowledge base of the profession;
• Engage in lifelong learning, including the pursuit of graduate study. Students will receive hands-on social work practice experience in the field through a required generalist social work internship. This internship provides 240 hours per semester of social work field experience to the student in exchange for the opportunity to observe, learn, and participate in designated areas of the agency over the course of the senior year. An agency field instructor will be the student’s main source of leadership and will act as a role model for the
student to practice professional competencies.

SSWO will be hosting the last membership meeting for the semester on Tuesday, April 18th from 12 pm to 1 pm. A presentation will be given by Heather Allen and Austin Tisdale, first year MSW students, about Transgender Affirming Care. Some of the talking points are Gender Identity (What it is and Isn't), The Do's and Don'ts for Transgender Patients and Areas for Advocacy. Let's support Heather and Austin in a big way and take back valuable information we can use in our practice.

SSWO membership meetings will be Monday February 13th at 12 noon and Wednesday February 15th at 12 noon. Since this is Black History month, SSWO has invited Dr. LaVerne Bell Tolliver to introduce her new book about 25 students who desegregated Little Rock's middle schools four years after the desegregation crisis at Central High. Please take the time to come by the student lounge and listen in on a great life's experience. Dr. Tracey Barnett will talk to us about the search for a new Director/Chair of our Social Work Department. These meetings are great times to ask questions and to get to know what's happening in our School. Hope to see you there!

Dear Campus Community,

In response to the grief expressed by so many faculty, staff, and students on the loss of Yolanda Whitfield, the Office of Student Housing has organized a memorial service on Tuesday, June 9 at 3:00 pm on Trojan Lane.

Yolanda came to UALR as a student in 2008. She was a Resident Assistant for two years, a Graduate Hall Director for two years, and a Living Learning Communities Coordinator for one year. She was also active in the Social Work program, Student Affairs program, and also worked in the TRiO Office and Financial Aid.
