A Message from UWA President Ken Tucker
Death of Emeritus Professor Crawford
Dear Colleagues,
The University community is deeply saddened by the news of the May 4th death of Dr. June Crawford, emeritus professor of education, who retired in 2008. A memorial service is expected to be held on Saturday, July 25, at 2 p.m. at First Christian Church in Tuscaloosa.
Dr. Crawford came to UWA in 1989, teaching courses in the College of Education. After four years, she left the university to move to Georgia and be near her mother, who was in poor health, also teaching middle school briefly while in Georgia. She returned to UWA in 1994 and stayed 14 years until her retirement. She taught a full range of courses at UWA, from undergraduate reading courses to graduate research courses. Alongside her teaching load, she served as a field experience coordinator and also coordinator of partnership schools. In fact, much of Dr. Crawford’s service record reflects outreach and partnerships that strengthened programs for UWA students as well as K-12 students in the region.
Dr. Crawford earned a bachelor of science in secondary speech education in 1978, a master of education in reading in 1980, an education specialist degree in 1984, and a doctorate of education in 1987, all from the University of Alabama. She also earned certification in education administration in 1992 and education supervision in 1994 from UWA. She taught reading, social studies, and English in middle and high schools for nine years in south Alabama. After earning her doctorate, Dr. Crawford left the K-12 school environment in 1988 to work at Judson College before joining the UWA faculty a year later.
Dr. Crawford is remembered by her colleagues as a driving force behind UWA Online, one of six faculty members who began the program through teaching and design. Without her support and collaboration with a core group of others, many say that UWA certainly would not have been at the forefront of distance learning. Following the establishment of UWA Online, Dr. Crawford continued designing courses and mentoring faculty who have taught in the online environment for UWA, even teaching in an adjunct role following her retirement.
We extend our deepest sympathy to Dr. Crawford’s family and closest friends during this time of grieving, including her husband, Dr. Tom DeVaney, also emeritus professor of education at UWA.
Dr. June Crawford’s Obituary
Sincerely,
Ken Tucker, Ph.D.
